If new to plastics, I would start with some gulp baits. I consider them an in between of live bait and typical plastics. 3″ and 4″ minnows and the crawlers are very good. Berkley powerbait also has some great new plastics, I think they call it the pro series. The jig worm and twitchtail minnow have been good for me. If you’re river fishing you can’t go wrong with B-Fishn Moxies or ringworm. As far as color, I’d say grab a few bright colors, make sure one is chartruese, and a few neutral colors and until you find whats working.

As far as jig head, don’t get jigs with the lead keeper, get ones with a wire keeper, better longevity of your plastic.

These were done a few weeks back for fishing the Mississippi while the water was still cold but will work in warmer water as well. They’re 2.5″ in length and are still a nice size for river eyes and sauger for a while yet. Smallies will chew on these pretty good too.

Purple body/chartreuse tail is a great combo as is white or pearl/chartreuse tail. Purple/white tail is a good combo.

The ones shown I make myself, but the B-Fish-N paddletails in 2.5″ and larger will take fish.

I’ve had the most success the past 2 years with white 4″ mister twister curly tails. Charteuse with sparkle is my 2nd option and purple the 3rd.
Jig size entirely dependent in the river current and/or river of lake depth fished.
In my opinion the jighead color isn’t near as much of a factor as the plastic. I usually just use unpainted jigs and see no difference when I go to color jigheads.

Every watershed contains different kinds of forage that the eyes chase, trying to replicate what other guys are catching fish on ten miles away, or 100miles away where the forage is completely different will leave you picking straws.

My recommendation with catching fish from various locations with very different forage base is the Powerbait Ripple shad, in smelt or perch. Chartreuse ringworm/moxi white core is also gaining confidence the more I use it.

I would recommend getting a bunch of jigs ranging from 1/16th up to 1/4 oz. I would then pick up a myriad of plastics. Ones that I have had great success on this year have been Zoom Flukes in white or shad, but also get ringworms, paddle tails, and sometimes a good old 3″ twister is effective. As far as colors, depending on water clarity, I find that purple is almost a must have, as it works in any river condition. I would also recommend getting something natural, like a Pro Blue color, and chartreuse has always been a producer for me as well. Lastly, I have been finding that light bucktails, like 1/8th oz ones, have been really effective as well. So, next thing to do is find a current seam on your favorite river and start pitching jigs! Good luck! Steve

Nice! I haven’t caught a fish on that color and was curious when to use it. It must work at night on rivers?

Best all around set up for me, and one where I basically have on all year in every body of water that I fish is the following: 1/4″ VMC moon eye jig in char or pink UV, then I superglue on a Z-man minnowz 3″ in pearl white. These Z-man products use a very durable type of plastic that can withstand literally hundreds of walleyes and pike before having to switch out. After using many many different plastics, these Z-man are by far the best.
