Plano 3700 storage – Garage

I have about 50 Plano 3700 trays that are stocked with tackle. I carry about 20 with me in the boat, and leave the rest at home. A while back I built a wall storage unit that holds maybe 30 trays. I’m looking for something with a higher capacity and a factory finish like the attached picture (which I’ve determined was a custom build). Any ideas where I could find this?

That looks easy and simple enough to build your own. Buy white melamine boards and go to town. The edge banding is not hard to put on by hand and they make a tool to trim off both sides at the same time. I prefer to use the 3700 utility box carrier. I put them in a drawer where I can read the labels from the top down. I find it takes up less room since you don’t have the space in between each box and by grabbing one bag I have 60% of what I want. Also the drawers keep the dust off. A simple option would be a deeper file cabinet. You can find these for free.

Yes, easy enough to build one any size and shape you want with white melamine. Edge banding is easy.

Cutting melamine without edge chipping with a table or circular saw is a little tricky. Use a small tooth blade and then put masking tape right on the cut line before cutting. Cut slowly. If cutting with a circular saw, use a zero clearance guide as well as tape.

Put swivel caster wheels or cabinet legs on the bottom to keep it off the floor if using anywhere where the base could get damp or wet. Melamine hates water.

I should have emphasized that I don’t want to build the darn thing but I get that I might have to. I’d rather spend my free time fishing.

Well what do you think it is worth to have a pro make one for you?
Frankly I’d look at a premade bookcase that has dimensions that would allow you to use sone L metal, maybe what is used as edge runner in acoustical drop ceilings, to be screwed into the sides to support the boxes.
I’d also have casters underneath so it can be moved easily.

Bring the picture to a local cabinet maker. Sticker shock may become a bigger issue however.

But I wouldn’t use melamine. Poplar or any other paint grade solid wood will hold up better and give more support if some boxes get heavier than normal.

John, if you can source what you’re looking for count me in for a double order. And I’m with you, I got better things to do than build it myself. waytogo

Honestly I could see a whole wall in my garage covered with that!

The pic looks like they used PVC panel. Easy to work with, similar to plywood in weight. You can use the PVC cement along with a few coarse screws to connect the pieces.

That picture is of my storage (how did you get into my shop?) I could take a closer pic if anyone wants one. My brother is a cabinet maker and did that in no time. Actually i zoomed in and it isn’t mine, but it is exactly the same. Mine was made with melamine

Is that the 1/2″ stuff? Not familiar with pvc, but the stuff I found online more than doubles the material cost over melamine.

Just curious. I’d think pvc would last longer than melamine in garage conditions.

Just be sure you get the solid core, not cellular core. The cellular gets dirty if you look at it wrong and will have black cut edges in no time, unless you paint it.
