my buddy just sold his ice castle which is what we used to stay in when going up to LOTW/rainy river. This year i want to hit up rainy river for opener and i wanted to know what the cheapest option is for lodging. i dont need fancy frills just a place to crash in between fishing. i looked at the dutchman resort based on another post and at 80$ a night for 3 people (i think that was per person) i was hoping to find something cheaper. any ideas on a cheap place to stay?

Pretty sure it’s $80/room. Nobody up there charges $80/person for just lodging.

oh if that is the case yeah 80$ divided by 3 people per night is very reasonable. thanks. if they are all around that price point do you have any recommendations on which places are the best i.e. treat you nicely, give good fishing advice, have clean lodging ect..

That’s weird though. Most places up there always figure your rates per person.

Always $50 or less per person per day though.

I stay at the baudette motel, nice clean cheap rooms normally like 60-70 bucks a night.

The Walleye Inn in Baudette fit the bill nicely. Clean, warm, free breakfast. Also located right in town near other necessities.

Baudette Motel, 800-200-2601. Was 60 to 65 a night for a room I think slept the 3 of us. We were in the new addition building.

so ive started to plan this trip in earnest and im wondering where most fellas launch onto rainy? im seeing a lot of people launch out of birchdale. i have never fished the rainy river aside from near the resorts on LOTW. is there good fishing to be had closer to international falls on the river too? there are more hotel options in international falls and im curious how the fishing is that way…Can i boat all the way from international falls to LOTW on the river assuming water levels are normal? Just trying to get a good idea of where i should stay in order to maximize the fishing international falls or baudette. any advice would help. thanks

Launching sites depends upon what part of the river is open. Some years the only ramps open are further upstream by Birchdale. The year I went (2012) the river was open all the way to Wheeler’s Point which isn’t the norm. For Lodging we stayed at Slim’s Resort and it was around $30/person/night. They had full kitchens and were exactly what we needed, a place to crash and make our meals. We’d fish from sunrise to sunset so there wasn’t time to get to a restaurant. I’ve attached a link to last years Rainy River info with a map of boat launches if you haven’t already seen it. http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/areas/fisheries/baudette/rainy_river_2012_final.pdf

Any yes, that is a Rainy River walleye in my avatar. Man, what a trip that was!
