Looking to buy a set of on line planner boards for trout and salmon fishing mainly. I’m looking for best bang for your buck and ease of using. I kind of like the idea of the board sliding down the line so you don’t have to touch it until you net the fish. Thanks for your thoughts.

If you don’t have a system to keep the board from sliding all the way to the lure, you will have issues with the board hitting the fish in the head and causing the lure to dislodge. Most of the time a smaller splitshot pinched on the line 3 to 5 feet above the lure will work. There is the added weight of the board that takes away some of the fight of the fish. Reel in to the board, remove the board, enjoy the rest of the fight, planner board free. I have both the yellow ones and the orange ones, both are easy to use and work equally well.

To take care of hitting the fish in the head, I think a lot of people add a barrel swivel and leader to stop it. Personally, I dont like the idea of having it slide down, I just reel it in, take off and fight the fish. One other option is to loosen the front clip so when a fish hits, you can pop the line out, the board flips backwards so you are only fighting the fish. You do run the risk of giving the fish slack and losing it. I use offshore boards and have been happy. One thing I’d recommend is sticking with whatever brand you start with. They all run differently and is easiest to run the same to detect light biters.
