Screwing around in the garage tonight and seen my planer boards I use early on superior…….. So I was wondering if any has tried planer boards to hunt walleye on the river 8n the shallow water? Do you think the fish are spooky enough to where this method might shine? I think I’m going to try it when the water warms up a bit ? Opinions please.

When the water warms it will also get dirty. Not sure if it would be needed then.

Some of my best fish have come before or after work from shore. This time of year a rod, tackle bag, boots, bibs, jacket, etc is ready to go in the truck at all times for a quick fish.

I’ve worked 80+ plus hour weeks many a times and i would argue it’s even more important to find that one hour or two to dip a line those weeks.

I agree with Mike. Many times fish come from right under the boat when water gets dirty.

A friend of mine pulled boards a few weeks ago in shallow water, (less than 10fow) pool 4, and did really well with quite a few decent fish. He said they got quite a few odd looks. But yes, it will work!

Pull boards in the upper end of CR and Pete early spring and late fall. It works. Usually 12 feet or less.

I pull planer boards on mouth of rock river and lake koshkonong all the time. Lake is 6 ft at normal stage, works very well spring thru fall. I have gone to using the mini boards in water this shallow.

I’ve used them on Lake pepin in 12′ or so, but nothing deeper. I can’t see how they wouldn’t work though.

I used to use them all the time when I lived near Mankato on Loon, Crystal, Elysian and Hanska in the 5-10′ range. They work great.

I have an interesting take on this from a trolling run I found years ago. Trolling early/ mid summer in 3-5′ of water. On weekends, with heavy boat traffic, I can troll right over them in 3′ and catch fish consistently. During the week or when boat traffic is low, I sometimes use boards. I believe the fish become acclimated to sound and movement conditions rapidly and respond accordingly.
