Im realitely new to Northern Pike fishing im working on filling out my tackle box and learning how to fish what i have.I currently have a large number of Daredevil spoons In red white/black white 5 of diamonds ranging from 1/2 oz to 1 oz. I also have some Mepps No5 spinners in black white and also copper.I just picked up some white bucktails aswell. I dont really know how to fish what I have and I have nobody to teach me. Any tips on baits to pickup and techniques?

Everyone here who’s fishing for walleye, bass, trout or panfish are bothered by pike. If you’re in a watercraft start casting weed edges in 10-20 ft of water. Use a steel leader and use any of the baits you listed, you’ll catch pike. There’s nothing they won’t bite on. You’ll catch a few and get smarter quickly. There’s probably a bunch of YouTube videos you can watch waiting for the ice to go out. I’m looking forward to some of the other replies!

You are on the right track. If you are fishing from a boat you can catch a ton of them with those spoons or #5 mepps just casting weed flats. You should have a ton of action. When the lakes start heating up in mid summer I do know those bigger pike dont tolerate the heat as much so they tend to pull off to cooler water. Good luck waytogo

Leave the 1 oz DareDevils at home unless you are trolling. When using DareDevils either casting or trolling I like a jerk and flutter presentation. Give the bait a hard rip then give it slack. The flutter when the spoon starts to fall will trigger the bite as soon as you pick up the slack and start moving the spoon forward again.

A white Twister Tail also works well. For me a spot of Red in the gill area of a crank bait seems to help although many say fish are color blind.

Always, always wet your hand before handling Pike if you intend to release it. That protective slime helps them stay healthy.

Lastly, you will be using good gear with decent line strenght if you are targeting Pike. Don’t mess around playing them if the water is really warm. Hook ’em up and get them in the boat. They stress pretty easily in warm water.

Go out and treat yourself to a couple whopper ploppers. Top water pike is the best part about pike fishing. I use smaller sizes but I’m looking for a bass or pike bite.

You’ll catch smaller hammer handle Pike anywhere you find Bass. The bigger fish will be in deeper water although every year there are nice Pike caught in the weeds. Drop-offs adjacent to weedbeds are prime. If your weedline runs out to 10′ and then drops into 15′ to 20′ of water you have found the spot. This is prime trolling using the “S” pattern moving in and out of the weeds and deep water.

    Have fun.
