I’m looking to do a little pike fishing for a day this weekend since it looks like the weather is going to be decent. Haven’t done this before on LOTW so just looking for a few places and pointers to start. Was hopefully looking to go out of the warroad side since it’s closer to where I’m coming from.
Should I stay in closer to shore in the shallower water or go fish some of the points that come out?
Live suckers or is there a place to get frozen smelt or large herring?
Been wanting to make a trip and try this just haven’t been able to yet! Hopefully it pans out for this weekend!
    Thanks!

I fish early season pike in NYS. However I don’t believe the methods vary on what it takes to get them to bite. Remember these fish are not aggressive like later season fish and often will just nudge – bump a bait rather than slam it.
I fish with X-Raps and Husky Jerks this time of year using a slow twitch – twitch pause technique. The pause cadence is (5 to 10) seconds.

Ops to late, I thought you were waiting for Ice out fishing. good luck either way.

Thanks for that joc, but yes I will be targeting them through the ice. We will have ice up here well into april.

Right out in front of the Warroad river is a popular area to fish. 6-10 feet along the channel edge or right on the first break. Otherwise the swift ditch area is also a good spot to try.

Check out the video we did last year. Pretty much all you need to know about presentation.

Dead bait is a good idea, seems to work better.

Thanks Ben! I’ll have to give it a try and see what happens! See if I can’t get my hands on some herring too!
