Pictures like this are what keep me hunting in the late season. This and one other clover plot were absolutely tore up after the 8-10″ of snow last Wednesday. It’s unusual that they are still hitting clover this late in the year, but it’s still very green under the snow.

After sitting in stand last Saturday morning for a couple hours in 10 below temps and not seeing a single deer I was a bit discouraged. Went and grabbed the cards out of all the trail cams and this picture revived my desire to get back out there.

Looks like a good buck out there. When I left the property after muzzleloader hunting I put out 800 pounds of corn in front of 5 different cameras to see what’s around. Going to let them soak for about a month before they get pulled.

That’s pretty sweet! Definitely one of the few trail cam pics that I have seen with that many deer in one photo.
It certainly has to be rewarding to see your offseason planning pay off with the food plots. Do you have other plots too? It will be interesting to see how the deer transition.

Yeah, I have 2 really good clover plots and they were both loaded with deer. Also have corn and beans, but most of that food is gone now. I need to plant MORE corn next year.

I’d be interested to know if anyone has ever planted enough corn?

I know the deer love it, but as far as a food unit produced per acre of land, it’s hard to stay ahead of the deer with corn.

Watch me!!! grin I agree 100% Grouse, but lately I have seen so many deer going to cut corn. Actually leaving my clover and other plots to go to the cut corn. I may not be able to keep up with them, but I am going to give it a shot!

Few years ago, we had less deer, but had a 19 acre stand of corn that couldn’t get picked in the fall. Just too wet. We let it go for the winter and it didn’t stand a chance. Once the snow was about 16″ or higher the turkey and deer just wiped it out. Once they make that diet change to corn, man can they eat!

I am hoping you are joking about this. If not you need to look around. Even “up north” there are corn fields everywhere and believe it or not the deer are feeding in them. I can’t think of a more natural food.

High levels of starchy foods like corn are a desired food source for deer in the winter. Any cropland area will have deer switching their diet to corn as soon as the cold sets in. Just ask any farmer that has standing corn in late nov or Dec
