My husband Billy and I took our pup Fritz out for his first time pheasant hunting today. We had a great time and it was a beautiful day! We didn’t get any birds, but it was a great experience getting Fritz into the field. He wasn’t hesitant to bound through the thick brush and he ranged well. We found a snake and there were grasshoppers everywhere! The corn was still up there, so the we’re figuring the pheasants had too many places to hide. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to get out again once the corn comes down.

It looks like it was still a fun time even if the birds didn’t cooperate for you. I am itching to get out chasing some birds myself.

Too bad the birds didn’t cooperate, but what a day to be out. It sounds like you had fun. We took the kids out to an apple-orchard–I think all the fields I saw west of the metro still had standing corn. That makes it tough.

I can’t wait to get out!

I got a laugh out of your snake pic. My wife is pretty open to doing things outdoors, but any snake, or even mention of a snake, will send her running and screaming (which is why I’m making sure that our 3-year old loves snakes ) ).

I know a few people who are afraid of snakes, too. Or spiders, mice, millipedes, frogs, etc. I can’t see how someone could be afraid of them! To each their own fear, I guess. I get distracted when it comes to bugs and critters – I want to play with them! Billy thought I fell at one point on Saturday because I was hunkered down on the ground… nope, I was playing with/photographing a woolly bear caterpillar. )

Got the weekend recap from the relatives in the Marshall area. Short version is this: Complete bust. Hardly a shot fired.

Almost 100% of the corn and about 50% of the beans are still standing. Given the low corn prices, everybody is waiting to let the corn dry naturally rather than have to incur the costs of gas drying it. So even when the beans are done, the corn may still be left there for a while.

Most of the heavily hit public areas are surrounded by standing crops and that made it almost impossible to get any action.

Lots of frustrated hunters doing a lot of road hunting hoping for the chance get lucky on a few birds sighted on the roads.

Bird numbers are down in MN to be sure, but what the relatives tell me is that there won’t be enough crop down and fields turned black to really concentrate the birds in the CRP and grass until at least the last weekend in October and more likely 1-2 weeks in November.

According to an uncle who farms 1500 acres by Marshall, most of the farmers near him agree they’ll be happy to be done with harvest and tillage by Thanksgiving. In a normal year, they’re wrapping it up around Halloween. Given that most hunters lose interest after October, I’m thinking the hunting pressure may be very light this year.
