Wow. I see this behavior on some dog websites but I still cant believe peoples reaction to it.

I saw that the other day. It reminded me that I need to charge Ripley’s collar.
I saw that on the news last night too. I think there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about the use of these. I know for a fact that my brother who lives in Chicago would never use one because his wife thinks they are inhumane. I myself use one with my 8 year old british labrador, both for general training purposes and hunting purposes.
The first thing I did when I got one for my dog was wrap that color around my leg, crank up the level to 100% and hit the button. It will get your attention for sure. But painful is not how to describe it. I run the collar at about 25%. Only need the beeper about 90% of the time.
By the way, I set the remote down on the counter and my wife grabbed it and shocked me again before I could get the color off my leg!!

Like anything, there are idiots who use them incorrectly, but when used properly, they’re great tools. Of course, I have put it on myself. My kids (6 and 8) have even tried it.
I believe that the shock collars are far more humane than some of the training methods I remember people using prior. I look at training collars about the same as I look at spanking kids. If used correctly early on, there will be almost no reason to use it much later on. Once the thought in in their mind only a slight warning ( Dog Collar = Warning beep ) is needed to correct the poor behavior you want to stop or correct. Before I get savaged on the spanking reference, Let me clarify there is a huge difference between a spanking and a beating. Let me finish by saying that since the whole society view change on spanking I’ve seen far more out of control children than prior. At the same time since shock collars have come into use Ive seen far more behaved dogs that I did prior. There is my .02 worth

I sometimes simply put the e-collar on my dog because she’s misbehaving in the house and I don’t even turn it on. The simple act of having it on her immediately changes her behavior because she learned years ago what that e-collar meant.
Media influence…
“CNN reported that $10 million of Petco’s 2019 $4.4 billion sales were from shock collars alone.”
For anyone who isn’t good at math…that equates to .22%…
10 MILLION ALONE!
My neighbor needs one for her ankle biter. Damn thing barks incessantly. I hate people who can’t discipline their dogs.
Living in the land of wolves the collar on
my dog is there to provide myself and my dog a safety net. I’ve used the shocker maybe twice to correct behavior / safety problems in three years. I dont keep it above level 5. The tone is used 95% and the vibration the other 5% as that is my main escalation button.
People in this world need to get a clue and figure out 100% control of other people’s actions is not the answer
My old Golden was a wandering tramp until I got that wireless fence, she stayed put after that. Had to watch the batteries close, she knew dang well when the collar was dead….off she went neighboring. I would not have a dog without one. DK.

Exactly! It’s not painful per se but it gets your attention. Reminds me of a TENS unit. It is important to me to subject myself to anything I’m about to subject my dog to. And like you said, when you train them properly (beep first, then zap) they learn quickly to just listen when the beep sounds. Hell, my dog actually listens a lot better when the collar is on ebcause she knows if she doesn’t listen, first comes the beep then if she’s still misbehaving the zap shows up. She figured out if the collar isn’t on I have no way to zap her so she can get away with a little more. She’s a good dog though, just very smart!
One of my dad’s good friends trained his own dogs, and I was under the impression the shock collar was only temporary. Once trained the collar is just there.
We went fishing at his cabin one time, walked out on dock and dog just stopped before the shoreline hit, was pretty cool, was in exact same spot when we came back. He proceeded to take off collar and threw it on a bench, dog took off to get a cool jump in the water. Asked him how often he gets shocked and how long batteries last, he chuckled and told me the things been dead for years. Dog just remembers.
That Petco one ,beeps to alert the dog is near the boundary, battery dead no beep, dogs a running
They are electronic training collars, not shock collars. Stimulation is what is emitted, not a shock.
Powerful tool but like with a hammer you can both build and destroy with one.
You can hold on to Maggie’s old collar, and get real stimulated.

I’ve got one that will sit in the Beep but not shock zone until the battery goes dead, then she’s off to the races. For a new battery, it takes a few months, but she’s patient:)……
