I have to do a persuasive paper for a college class and have to pick a controversial topic. I would like to do it on a fishing related topic. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Slot size limits.

I just instinctively ducked for cover under my desk when I typed that.

Not fishing related, but I think since its front and center now, how about some sort of change to gun control laws. Cannot get much more controversial than that.
You could cite the USA Today article that hit yesterday with the “attachments” for ARs including “chainsaw bayonet”. LMAO

    Put and take walleye fisheries.

Technology and it’s effects on fish populations.

    Lowering limits.

Big box outdoor stores and their effect on small shops.

Do fisherman care more in how they look fishing rather than how they are fishing.

I had a legit reply to this topic but now I can’t stop laughing at that comment.

Having a season on Walleye. There are many professional reports of people for and against this. Should be easy to find CREDIBLE sources on this topic.

    Anyway….

I think an interesting topic would be the ethics and responsibility that go with catch and release.

For example, in a made up scenario, let’s say a statewide regulation says you can keep X amount of fish. However, you’re fishing on a smaller-acreage pond/lake that really can’t handle massive fishing pressure and it’s Mayish/Juneish and you know some of the fish you’re catching have eggs.

Legally, under the state reg. you can keep X amount of fish. But with the caveats of the body of water size in relation to pressure, the time of year, etc., SHOULD a person do that? Is a limit/bucketfull today, if everyone does it, worth possibly depleting a fishery tomorrow?

I agree with Capt… since some are blaming the sheer number of guns, are responsible for the violence in the USA, do a graph showing how Americans own so many more guns than other countries… and if we blame it on gun numbers, how our percentage of killings/gun in the USA are far below those countries with less guns.

-The ability/skill of a fisherman vs. the value of their boat/gear
-If you pro-staff for a fishing company are you really as cool as you think )
-Why the heck do sturgeon randomly jump out of the water and scare the bajesus out of me?

OK OK here are a few real ones that weren’t mentioned yet
-Do saugers/walleyes really pin bait to the bottom to stun it before eating.
-Spawning Theory and what are the most fertile sizes of each species in a fishery
-“Best” tasting freshwater fish, which would include a independent taste test set up by you (I will volunteer to be on that panel :))

I’d stay away from gun laws because your professor may actually know a little bit about it OR WORSE take a side… Go with something fishing where they know little which will make you sound better=better grade!

Personally, I’d go with a topic where it’s easier to do your research on both sides.. Easier to access equal amount of facts from both sides is what I mean.,not just discussion.

Why 2 or even 3 lines work in the border waters but won’t work on the inland lakes or rivers (except for in the winter).

Seriously, you would have a chance a changing a law. (I said a chance)

I did a persuasive paper on wearing a life preserver. We had to write a one page speech and give it in class. I took a glass bowl and filled it with water, and set it in front of me. I finished my speech by stating the choice was theirs and dropped two bell sinkers into the bowl, but one had a bobber attached to it. Nailed it.

There are only 2 sexes. Male or female.
