Made it out yesterday for the first time this year on Mille. Had a great day going until the boat spun a hub and we had to limp back to the landing midday. Caught about a dozen eyes and my new personal best smallie that went 21.5”, just nudging out my previous best of 21.25” also from Mille Lacs. We did best on big cranks in on rocks in 10-12 fow.

Awesome! My largest came out of lake vermilion at 21.5″ also but my buddy pulled a 23″ out of a tiny lake ice fishing on a tip up (roughly 22.5-23). Wish cell phone cameras and quick access to the record book was around back then as it would have been close.

And aren’t those a blast to catch?

I caught my PB Smallmouth probably 15 years ago. Caught my PB and just a few cast later set a new on. Was pre-fishing for a bass club event on Koronis lake near Paynesville. 1st fish was right at 22″ – the next fish was just under 22.5. They were both huge. Both were well over 6 I believe. The 2nd fish may have been pushing 7. Still full of eggs. Less than a week later during the club tourney all we caught were small buck bass. The females got done and were nowhere to be found. Have had that happen a few times during my old bass club days. I wish I had a picture of those 2 fish ( Ya I know without pictures it didn’t happen )

Low 50’s yesterday am, we left as the sun was starting to cook so I’d imagine it climbed quite a bit yesterday afternoon.

Tues. Morning when we got on the lake the Temp was only 49 deg’s. I think it got to around 52 by the time we finished. We were on the East and south end. Someone said the West and North end were a few Deg’s warmer

If it was low 50’s in the morning it came up a little in just 1 day. Next week hopefully the temps get in that upper 50’s range and then the spawn will kick into high gear

    Nice fish!

Smallie bite is pretty good right now. I’ve been finding them all over the place, but many seem to be content just roaming and searching for a spawning spot. On Monday, I must have spotted 150 smallies on the East side, but caught only 14 or so.
