yea I don’t know the lake well enough, I’ve just driven by it like a zillion times. I know its a deep lake and there used to be a fishery up on the north end of the bridge. stopped once in a while at the bar/resturaunt by the bridge for a burger once in a while.

looks great!! I see they offer a timer occialator for the de-icer are you running that? i wish we had one on ours, looks like it doubles the de-icer power.

I’m shocked. It’s been about 8 hours and there is about a 10′ x 10′ open water area under the dock. There was 30″ of ice the de-icer chewed thru.

    Amazing!

Went and checked on the progress at 6:00 am this morning. It’s amazing at how well the de-icer works. I would say the dock will be ice free later on today.

I had to go look at a job in Milaca today, so I got up a little early and drove to the cabin first. (it was only 3 hours out of the way doah )
My ADD wouldn’t let me sleep unless I saw how much ice was gone since last Sunday.

The dock was 99 % released from the ice pack. Next week I may be able to open water fish off the dock. waytogo

I grabbed one of the posts and tried to shake it as hard as I could. To my surprise, it didn’t move! Not even an 1/8″.

    Thanks Skeeter,
The de-icer is pointing towards shore, I was going to aim it out into the lake but I decided to call the DNR first. (I didn’t want to de-ice the entire north end of the lake rotflol ) The aireation expert didn’t call me back yet.

Were you really surprised? HA!! I wasn’t! toast
With dimension sizing of your structure and the fasteners then going to the dianagle flooring the only thing you could have done, (actually I thought you did but I cannot verify in the pics) was to use dimenital 2×6 lumber for the flooring.
    Nicely done! toast

now they are going to bust you for shore erosion !!!
shoot man, with the winter we have had here and you up there,I would have the boat out trolling that shoreline !!!!
I would even try pitching a jig under the ice thats left at the end of the dock !!

I doubt that, but the DNR may have something to say about creating open water. They do require permits for aerating lakes.

ya,I know, just razzing EPG,gotta keep him on his toes ya know !!
I have to say,he did an awesome job on that dock !!! most nail benders I know cut a board three to six times and its still too short !!

never read about any power outages in that area from someone shorting out the entire electrical grid by dropping power tools in the water,so,either the tools were too big to fall down the hole,or they had life vests on !!!

come to think of it,Outing is one those small towns that may not have an electric power grid??
EPG,is that town so small that the city limits is on both sides of the sign???,and the power plant is a sears diehard??
do they have to pump in daylight??? if so that would explain why the hoot owls and chickens look so funny up there !!

I never expected that much open water that quick. Kind of crazy what a little moving water can do.

Would you leave the aerator running all winter or for just the spring thaw before the ice starts moving?

It is a great looking dock. I’ll keep this thread in mind when ours needs to be replaced in a few years.

Nobody is going to ask “how much”?????

    Well funny you asked…

    Got about $1500 in material
    a couple hundred in fasteners
$800 in de-icer and mounting bracket
    Prolly 25 hours in labor

The driver was around $650 when the dust cleared.

So far it looks like the project will be successful.

I bet the strobes and ten gozillion terrawatt led’s will cost more than that !!
I hope those posts are solid !! in a ten mph wind a fifty foot American flag will generate enough power to pull a skier.

you mean bullheads like this??? https://programs.iowadnr.gov/masterangler/masterangler/details/4770

shoot,we use those for musky bait around here, when we catch a musky we cut the cheeks and the back straps out and release them to catch again next year when the meat grows back.( all of the chemicals in the water make that possible )
dont want to waste anything ya know !!

So for ice fishing you will now have to access the lake from somewhere else? Or build a temporary ramp to walk down from your dock to the ice?

This looks like a ton of work, but you did a great job. Was this the maximum size the DNR would allow for a permanent? Could you add on down the road if you wanted?

Thanks for sharing. I have no doubt people looking to build one themselves will stumble upon this for years down the road from Google searches.

    Glenn,
I was up last weekend and they were still making ice. It was in the teens at night. Did it look like it was getting ready when you drove by Friday.

    Queen-
I could probably add to it as long as the walkway is no wider than 8″.

Sheldon – You can come up anytime. Bring firewood and #7. and alot of it. rotflol

the only open water was buy the bridge on 6. the little park/access right there looked fairly rough too!!!! other then that the shorelines didn’t look all that bad.
