Permanent Daylight Savings?

There is legislation in Congress right now to permanently keep Daylight Savings year round. I know that some states already do this.

Pros – more daylight in the winter at the end of the day. Instead of getting dark at 4:30 – 5pm, it would get dark around 5:30 – 6pm.

Cons – more darkness in the winter in the morning. The sun would not come up until 8:30am – 9am in the winter as opposed to coming up at 7:30am – 8am now.

I guess the only significant impact for me would be when I’m hunting. Would be a later starting time and a later finishing time but the total amount of daylight to legally hunt would not change.

I don’t care whether it’s DST or not but one of them should be permanent, switching is ridiculous.

Please, just keep it the same all year. Right now in the winter I go to work and it is dark and I come home and it is dark. My office no longer has windows so I don’t see sunlight until the weekend. The later sunrise in the summer would be nice for being on the water at daybreak and extra sleep.

The switch honestly doesn’t bother me. Now, sunrise at almost 9:00 am would bother me.

Same. And the big thing is kids going to the bus stops in the dark. That’s been the number 1 concern. This has seen legislation a few times before. Seems senseless.

What about getting light out at 4am in the summer? That would stink!

    Keep DL savings!

I’m in this boat as well. A switch isn’t a big deal for me. I do quite a bit long before the sun rises many days the way it is. I’d rather see the sun in the morning at a decent time.

The biggest argument against this locally is probably schools. Having kids at bus stops and driving to school long before the sun is up in the Winter just adds more concerns. At this time of the year the roads are just more slick and visibility is typically worse early in the morning before fog burns off with the sun.

For the fishing angle, it really would only hurt my efforts as it currently takes a bit of effort and planning to get out before the sun is up. If the sunrise is later it just lessens that advantage.

this!!!!! reading up on this legislation, someone said they tried this back in 1973’74. there was a big issue with kids getting picked up in the dark as well as bus drivers doing most there driving.

the other arguement made was when it got dark early at night more crime was committed vs in the morning.

personally i dont care.leave it as is but if they do change it put it on the standard time which i believe is how its set during the winter…..i think?????

Kids are being picked up in the dark with the current set-up. My oldest gets on the bus every morning at 6:30 and youngest is at 7:00. In the winter with DLS it’s still dark anyways. Just change it to a constant year round!

The bill that passed the senate would move us to permanent DST (which is what we just switched to).

I don’t understand what is to hate. Does the 1-hour switch really throw people off that much? I have kids, and sure, it messes with them for a couple of days, but they adapt. It’s no worse than jet lag from traveling to another time zone.

It’s much worse on my dog. The spring-forward is no prob, but when we fall back, ooh, he does not like waiting an extra hour for his supper. rotflol

It passed in the Senate so now we see what the House will have to say. I know there are a few states who don’t switch to DST, but is it really that much of a nuisance? It feels weird for a few hours two days out of the year. And I agree, 9am is too late for a winter sunrise! Winter is hard enough already on people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, so having DST all year would make winter mornings kinda rough I think.

Robins chirping at 4 AM in the morning does not sound appealing at all to me. Those SOBs are annoying already, when they start at 5.

I do agree. I’m not sure why all the hate. I’m a early riser no matter what day of the year it is. I like early sunrises

I work nights will take me 2 weeks before I’m on schedule again. I would say one way or the other just pick.

Doesn’t matter to me, but, the longer the legislature argues about this, they cant screw up anything that really matters. If an hour difference twice a year affects you that much, I do feel sorry for those folks.

I know a number of people that get winter depression and the extra hour of light in the evening would be a benefit. If we stayed on this flopping back and forth, do the opposite and more evening light in winter.

If we stay on the dst permanent, I’m good with it

On another note, how is this one of the most pressing issues our lawmakers have to deal with?

The fact that we are shelling out millions of dollars to debate, discuss, and draft changes to a 1 hour time change is hard to comprehend with a decent likelihood that all the efforts are still scrapped.

this is nothing new, was done in 73 or 74? they threw it out after a short experience, kids waiting on the corners in the morning in the dark was the reason. I like it myself

I also work a ton of nights as well as doubles and triples. I don’t understand how it may take weeks to re adjust

Easy fix for that. Start school 9-10am. I’ve read studies kids do better sleeping later anyway.

Drove to work this morning at 7am in the dark. Kids are waiting for the bus in the dark now. What are we fixing?

I hope they get rid of daylight savings. I’d much rather have some light outside of work hours all year long, rather than go to work in the dark and come home in the dark now. And with young kids it sucks too. Family in AZ is janky too, since they don’t have daylight savings. Really no legitimate reason for it imo.

This “easy fix” creates more problems than it solves. Our local district looked into it.

What does a parent do with their 3-6 year old children for the 2.5 hours every day between when they go to work and when school starts? That’s always been the biggest holdup to schools starting later. Our local district pushed for 9:00am – 3:45pm school days and was met with stiff resistance. With more and more 3-4 year old kids attending school daily, there wasn’t a good solution. The school aged daycare programs are overflowing without the proposed change. Starting later also pushes extracurriculars later and squeezes down gym time while forcing kids to leave school early for away games.
