Pepin evening/night fishing question

    Guys,

I’ve always assumed there’s not much of a night bite on Pool 4 for eyes in the summer. I know guys do fish at night during spring/fall up by Red Wing etc. But I thought the common wisdom, at least for walleye, was not as much activity in evening/at night on Pepin/Pool 4. I have tried night fishing a couple of times in June/July with pretty poor results.

But figured I’d ask…do many guys try and evening/night fish Pool 4 for walleye? If not, is it just cuz the water is pretty muddy so bite is poor? Or, if you do fish and have success, is there a particular technique / depth to try?

    Thanks

I’ve not caught fish after dark on Pepin in the summer but I have had some really good bites right up to sunset casting crankbaits to the riprap. But once the sun sets the bite has always….stopped. At least for me. Finding the areas to cast during that last hour or two of the day has been pretty straightforward. If I’m catching fish trolling during the day in deeper water that’s near to some good looking riprap I would often see my trolling bite die off a couple hours before dark… only to relocate those fish shallower on the riprap. So if your trolling bite dies, make a shallow pass with the casting rods before heading to the docks.

Not on Pepin but on pool 2 my brother and I have caught a few fish after dark in the summer. We wernt really trying to just finishing a trolling run before heading in and trolled ultra shallow 3-6ft.Like James said we have done the same thing on pool 2,catch fish trolling during the day then towards evening slide up and fan cast the shallows nearby and pound them till dark.I think river fish act like lake fish more then people think as far as them sliding up shallow in low light to feed, dirty or clear water.I couldnt even begin to tell you how fun it is catching a walleye on just about every cast.Good luck
