Normally the crank bite starts when spawning is over and the fish start moving back down to the lake.

(Late May-June is the cranking bite…I think)

I dont’t know about that. I’ve caught eyes on cranks in 38 degree water right after ice-out plenty of times

I know it not exactly the same water, but in my smaller local river, I’ve been casting crankbaits since March 1st and the walleyes have been hitting them all along.

What kind of cranks do you throw in the river early season Dave?

I don’t think anybody was saying that cranks won’t work in cold water. They’re saying the majority of the fish are not going to be staged out in the middle of the lake feeding in open water yet. I’ve caught fish on cranks in 35 degree water before, but that doesn’t mean it’s always the best technique. There are times where covering water makes sense, and casting cranks is a great way to do that. That being said, if you can find a pod of fish wanting to chase down cranks on the lake, I’d imagine they’d be some good fish. I personally don’t have the time to invest in such an endeavor at this point.

I’ve been throwing some Rebels, Storm and Rapalas, mostly long narrow shallow divers. My most productive one has been a green chartreuse Rebel about 4 1/2 inches long.

Interesting. So these aren’t diving very deep right… like a couple feet at most? Are you throwing them in deeper holes and they are coming up for them or eddies, shallow flats?

Sorry to the OP… don’t mean to hijack the thread.

I always liked Lake Liger Larry but Lake Loon Larry is probably more applicable …

The baits will run up to about 3 to 3.5 feet deep usually a little less. Throwing to shallow flats, current seams and drop offs. This is where I find the active fish.
