people crowding your hole

Fisher people have become nomads…. they move around from lake to lake, spot to spot and don’t give it a second thought. When I was a kid, we fished our lake… if there was a hot bite somewhere, our perm stayed there, it was a half day project to move 50 yards, drilling 4 holes by hand… yikes. Now with portables, wheel houses and unlimited funds to travel from one end of the state to the other, people are not accountable to their neighbor like we used to be. Around my dad’s perm shack (6×8 plywood) there was all our neighbors shacks… and everybody did get along… you had to !

I was looking at a lake map at home picking out the spot i wanted to fish . Drove an hour to get there unloaded all my gear and drive out to the stuckture on my wheeler to find a permanent house sitting there. It doesn’t look like anyone had been there in a week no tracks and snow drift over the door. I set up maybe twenty five yards from the house and started fishing. About twenty minutes later a snowmobile came roaring up to me, I figured it was the game warden. Guy pulls up and says I’m fishing too close to is house he watches it from his house on the lake. I apologized and said I would move away further. He said ok and roared back to his house. I didn’t want to start anything I was by myself but I thought gee how nice it would be to put a house on the best spot on the lake and guard it from home so no one else could fish there. Wow

Wow indeed, 25 yards from an unoccupied house, I wouldn’t have moved unless the spot sucked. Too many of these folks who live on a lake think they own the whole lake and it gets old. I have heard of people who live on a lake that will set up 3 or 4 houses on structure just to block others, not cool in my book.
Now if I pulled up and the house was occupied I would have probably given it a little more space. Heck if he has enough time to sit and watch his house and come harass you about it, why isn’t he in the house fishing?

The issue here is people on BOTH ends of the spectrum need to show some common sense, pull their heads out of their a$$ and begin talking with people they meet outdoors again.

Some of our most memorable stories on the ice are when people come crowding in on us. we don’t have a ton of bigger bodies of water so most of our local fishing spots are public borrow pits and canals.

There is an old guy we had met years ago and occasionally run into each other on the ice. its 2012 and we finally get ice almost the end of january down here in illinois. we fish a public borrow pit on friday and just put the hammer down on some brush that isn’t really known by many.

We show up the next morning and there are a group of guys on some older xmas trees that are almost gone. we keep on our way to our spot when my buddy recognizes the old guy we see here or there and is like i’m gonna go talk to them

I say, don’t they’ll see that as an invitation to come over and fish next to us. he thinks i’m crazy and goes over there. i head over to the spot set up and just start hammer time again. he comes back over joins me, within 20 minutes, old guy is on his way over and in 15 more minutes his 3 buddies make their way over. we both are like oh know. he’s like you were right my bad.

We had about 40 holes drilled and had to move around those holes to keep on them. these guys basically surrounded us, and set up in all our holes…like 10′ from the ones we were fishing. we are good sports and what transpired next made it worth it.

These guys fished old school with bobbers. just dropped em down and jigged it a bit. no electronics. but the key to this bite was electronics.

for about 3 hours these guys sat there and watched us put on a clinic. they didn’t catch a single fish while my buddy and i worked these fish up and caught probably 100+ crappies.

Eventually they got sick of this and left. my only real irritation is one of the guys made a handful of phonecalls to other friends tellign them that “we are hammering them” and giving them the exact location.

Luckily we lost our ice 3 days later and i believe most have forgetten about that spot.

Very annoying. But that’s part of the problem. Is all these guys post spots all over Facebook and crap. That’s where 90 percent of the crowd originates from.

I enjoy a afternoon bsing with other people out and around. That’s quite different then what the OP was about.

I tend to hit the ice with a pay it forward type of attitude and it works out well most of the time. The guys who are rude are still going to be rude, but the nice guys can really make a good day on the ice great.

I was fishing recently and I had a couple guys encroaching on me but kept a respectable distance and I was really catching em. I was very impressed with their restraint and their respect for my space that I walked over and invited them over and showed them how to do what I was doing. They were more than grateful and we enjoyed the sport of fishing together!

The flip side to this is when a guy sees you catching fish and gets so close he can read your locator better than you and doesn’t say a word and won’t look at you because he’s embarrassed by his actions. Same spot, same fish, all that’s different is some people have respect and others do not. Show respect out there and most of these issues go away.

Yes, what is it about ice fishing threads that so many sound like the could just as easily be titles of low budget porn flicks?

It over stated the obvious, but I was impressed that Ice Castle sells 3000 units a year. They say between 20K and 40K. Say the average is 30k – 90 million in sales! Now your talking some serious jing.

I would’ve told him to call a warden. Law says 10’.

It’s interesting because I fish pretty crowded water on the river. Pool 4 can get pretty nuts in March and April with boats hull to hull. I’m sure there are horror stories but guys seem to know what to expect and it’s civil. I’ve never seen any big conflicts.

Maybe it’s different on the ice because you aren’t as mobile.

when the walleye are running in the Maumee river in Toledo, OH, the people stand shoulder to shoulder all the way across the river. Waist deep water, shoulder to shoulder. I could never do it.

I do this to. Take the boat out to rub a little paint. But I think 90 percent of guys going to look 4 then know what to expect

i think river walleye guys don’t mind it because they are used to it. normal operating procedure.

Load a shotgun with blanks and shoot into the air. Act like you’re a bunch of drunks. It should scare the hell out of them and you’ll have your spot to yourself again!

Probably true….I actually kinda look forward to it. It’s always fun to see the $80k Rangers rubbing paint with a 25 year old duck boat. And, it’s usually the duck boat guys out fishingthe Ranger guys.

Set up on a hump in the southeast corner of Harriet yesterday about 230. Had the lake to myself except for two guys in portables on the other side of the lake. At about 430 a guy comes walking from the south beach area, aimed directly at my shack. I stayed outside and greeted him as he got closer. We shot the breeze for a minute or two and I was friendly, which I hoped would inspire the guy to set up at a respectable distance from me. Instead he pulls out the jiffy and drills no fewer than 10 holes basically in a semicircle surrounding my tip-up, maybe 10 yards away. He wasn’t a bad guy, but he was clueless. I mean, 350 acres of ice dude. Cmon now.

on a metro lake i have no problem with what he did. maybe instead of getting mad you could have made a new fishing buddy. obviously you guys fish the same lake and similar spots

I wasn’t mad, just annoyed. As my post states I was friendly to him and we chatted, just didn’t think he would set up right there with the whole lake open. I know how it is in the metro, which is why i try to fish weekdays and off peak. Didn’t let it ruin my day. Had a few good quiet hours before he showed up.

Love the anglers who see the op to meet a new angler.

I miss the days of being an “angler” was cool enough. Lots of pre-judgement today & ya ain’t even made the kind jester to meet the stranger. Don’t get it… we’re all here to live & let live.

Now it’s more like, oh you fish from one of those _______ (fill in the blank) fancy ice castles, sparkly boats, etc… and the humanity ends.

    I digressed. Carry on
