people crowding your hole

I think that most who ice fish have had the experience of a person/house drill up right next to you even though there are few houses out and plenty of structure to be fished especially on Mille Lacs. If I can hear a guy or girl fart from inside the house they are too close. You know what I mean. I am not a person that needs 100yards around me. Try this, It has worked for me a couple times. Align your transducer at their hole. It will screw up there flasher with interference. I have an old one I bring along just in case I get into this situation. Fun too!

I guess you never had a fish get squirreled up in your line from another house next to you.

    Whatever

exactly my point. not trying to cause problems. I get my house out early because I know the lake and stays all winter. All other perm houses are fine its the portable weekenders that way are too close. Maybe I am the only one with this problem? Or did I find the super spot?

A number of years ago i was ice fishing Nelson Bottoms. 2 others and self walked out on Long Walk. Set our tip ups.Couple hours went by a group of guys comes set there shack up, sets some of their tip ups feet away from ours! We did not say a word, only amongst ourselves. These guys were drinking pretty good. Some were taking a long neck with them and leaving it next to their trap.A couple more hours goes by and here comes a guy with a big dog. I happened to glance and see the dog lifting his leg and peeing into one of the long necks ! The guy makes his way up to us with his friendly dog. He says he is with the Corps of Engineers for a future dredging project. We talk a little and they leave. Someone yells flag , watch this guy go running out to his tip up and missed the fish. He reset,s the trap. Then picks up the long neck and drains it. One fond memory, what goes around .comes around hah

    what about this scenario?
You have a permanent out, but are not there, in your house fishing. Say your house is on good structure. Some other fishing folks want to fish that structure. You are not at your shack. They set up all around your shack. A couple hours later, you show up to fish your shack.

Would you give them the evil eye and cuss them out under your breath in your shack? Or do you leave and fish another time?

I was looking at a lake map at home picking out the spot i wanted to fish . Drove an hour to get there unloaded all my gear and drive out to the stuckture on my wheeler to find a permanent house sitting there. It doesn’t look like anyone had been there in a week no tracks and snow drift over the door. I set up maybe twenty five yards from the house and started fishing. About twenty minutes later a snowmobile came roaring up to me, I figured it was the game warden. Guy pulls up and says I’m fishing too close to is house he watches it from his house on the lake. I apologized and said I would move away further. He said ok and roared back to his house. I didn’t want to start anything I was by myself but I thought gee how nice it would be to put a house on the best spot on the lake and guard it from home so no one else could fish there. Wow

If someone is set up fishing close to my perm shack and I’m gone that’s ok with me and I would still fish and not care. Setting up feet from an established person is a bit much when the structure runs close to a half mile. I can’t pick up my house and just move like temp shelter can.

I would never set up close to anyone already fishing. 25 yards is a long way away even if that guy was in his house. Chasing you a way is ridiculous. Good choice moving. Crazy is crazy

It’s the worlds most annoying thing to have people crowd you. But that’s ice fishing these days. People are rude. Not much courtesy any more. On the big pond the other day some one set up between my shack and my tip up that was 30 ft out my front door. I said something and the guy started running his mouth that I didnt own the lake.
I decided to be the bigger man, drilled about 900 holes around his house until he left. twisted

A lot of primadonnas on this site lately.

Setting up by people is not something “new.” This is actually how most people fished back in the day…and apparently still do! You would ALWAYS see HUGE communities of shacks on the ice…they just seemed to get along back then and not urine and moan about it.

I sometimes fish with four guys in my 8×8 shack, all with flashers and never had a problem and we all caught fish. What’s the difference if it’s your buddy fishing feet away or a stranger? Someone sets up 20’ from me, who really cares. Go say hi.

    Edit. Fixed spell check. Lol

Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I’ve never had these issues. Not to say that I’ve never gotten lines crossed up with a fellow angler, I’ve just never had an issue with it.

Im not into crowds that being said if my memory serves me when i knelt down to my tip up i could easily reach the new guys tip up. Thats to close . It did not help that this group was drinking enough to be loud and somewhat obnoxious . I got an invite to bow hunt Camp Ripley a fews years back . Once was enough ,good experience but when you see more hunters than deer thats not for me .

As far as I can tell, this is NOT illegal in Minnesota. If there is a law, I could not easily track it down. coffee

Many, if not all ice fishing contests do not allow it. Maybe that is where the confusion is.

If it were illegal, just about every perm shack and wheelhouse out there would be getting tickets. Never heard anyone getting cited for having a bottle of booze on the ice.

Yeah,, As sportsman today we aren’t doing anyone any favors. It’s brutal out there. Somehow over the past 30 years the outdoorsman has changed from a group of guys just out to have fun and get a meal to a complete MAN/MANLY thing and the bigger or more or more often an outdoorsman is successful is somehow the gauge of their masculinity. I liked it better when it was just about food and fun. I blame it on the commercialization of the industry.

Getting along with people is completely different then being inconsiderate or an a$$. Many times I meet new people on the lake and either teach something I know, or learn something they know. (That’s part of being a sportsman).
Obviously if your fishing the well known hole for crappies there will always be a crowd. But when your in a crowd be considerate. If I have a tip up out dont set yours 5 ft from mine. That’s not sportsmanship.

I would never drill to close to someone without asking, and I’ve always been shown the same courtesy. I think its sad to see everyone get their undies in a bunch over everything these days. Look at some of the vexilar/marcum discussions, or any political discussions. People cannot seen to agree to disagree, an argument must ensue.

Gone are the days of tolerance, it’s now the days of me, me me.

It might be common courtesy on larger lakes to leave some space but on some of the smaller lakes you can’t expect to have the entire basin or structure to yourself.

So, by getting to a spot early in the season with a perm shack and sitting there all year is claiming it as your own spot.
By those regards Maybe I will start anchoring Fishing rafts in spots on the lakes I want to fish.

The issue here is people on BOTH ends of the spectrum need to show some common sense, pull their heads out of their a$$ and begin talking with people they meet outdoors again.
