Pellet Gun Trap for Target Shooting

Anybody fab a target range trap for pellet gun use? Want to build one to use in the garage w/ small targets. Met a bunch of neighbors in CO that have a pellet gun league shooting 25′ at small targets in the garage. Fun and cheap activity.

Crosman makes a decent trap; sounds a bit tedious to replace cardboard holding targets. I’d rather have knockdown or
    free-standing targets vs paper targets.

Looking for some information re: angles, steel strength, catch basin design, etc.

    Thanks

Here’s what I made up for the yard. Not an actual trap but it works well. The frame is 3/4″ steel tubing with the rods being 5/16″ threaded. Eye screws support the 1″ plywood backer on the top and bottom rods. I add a couple S hooks to the top rod and hang an old kapok boat cushion behind the target area to catch pellets that shoot thru. Depending on how much shooting has been done to chew up the plywood the pellets generally are on the ground under the target and the cushion stops all others. I replace the wood about three times a year. I set this up in the back yard and shoot from inside the garage to eliminate prying eyes…about a 24 yard shot.

I’ve been known to sling some cb caps at this too but will place another layer of plywood in front of the stand and hang the target on that and they won’t shoot thru the two layers. A 22 short will but the cushion stops them or I’ll put two pieces of plywood in the front.

I take this to the cabin to use in the yard with the muzzleloaders. Of course I need to swap out the plywood when I’m done doing this. But for a convenient and fairly safe backer this works great.

Watching this topic as well. I was thinking exactly the same thing last week, I need to build a trap for the kids now that they graduated from BB guns which are much easier to stop with cardboard.

I have an el cheapo steel trap, brand unknown. It works, but just barely and only for me because it’s too small. The kids can’t use it to shoot offhand because I’m afraid they’ll miss the trap.

There is also no shelf for steel silhouette targets, which I love to shoot.

Also, the steel is so thin that I bolted a backing board to the trap as an emergency stop in case the constant pounding tears the steel backing and I don’t see it in time.

A lot of online DIY builds use sealant putty to stop the pellets. I’d prefer steel traditional trap as once it’s built, it lasts forever.

Thinking of building an OSB trap, but with a steel sheet bolted as a backing plate…
