I have a couple Pear trees kicking a$$ this year. Just ate one that fell on the ground. Very tasty.

The Honey crisp not doing so well, the Japanese beetles destroyed the leaves for the 2nd year in a row.

Funny – The pear trees are only 20′ from the apple tree and are un-touched

Funny. I just found a pear tree on my walk today and ate one. It was nice. The tree was loaded. Every apple tree in my neighborhood is loaded this year.

That is sweet EPG!! I just checked the pear tree here at work an hour ago and found it to be loaded with pears also. Must be a great year for pears.

I have several pears mixed in with my apples at home. Like you said, the Japanese beetles tried to ravage my apples, until I sprayed them with Sevin spray, but they do not touch the pear trees. Don’t ask me why, but I hope they don’t find out they like pear leaves. I have enough trouble trying to keep the little monkeybutts off my apple trees!

Wife and I were just talking about putting a couple pear trees in but didn’t know if they grew well up here. Guess I just learned something and now have more things to plant next year.

Is there a particular variety of pear you guys have planted?

The one at my work we think is a wild pear. It’s a farmstead from a long time ago. The one I have planted at home is a snow sweet pear. It’s a MN winter hardy pear tree. It has lived thru 3 MN winters so far and doing quite well.

Just as a note for those who want to plant pear trees, pears are not self-pollinating, therefore you need at least 2 of them to get reliable pollination.

Make sure you get a variety that is at least Zone 4 (if not 3) hardy.

The Honey crisp not doing so well, the Japanese beetles destroyed the leaves for the 2nd year in a row.

My father finally chainsawed all his Uselesscrisp–err “Honeycrisp” apple trees. For years and years he simply could not get them to bear consistent fruit even when his other variety trees were loaded, the weak/wimpy Honeycrisps would be standing there with 20 apples on 4 trees. Nothing to do with frost. One year in 4 he’d get a decent number of apples. I was surprised he waited that long to cut them down.

Actually if there is another pear tree within a 4 block radius you can likely get by with one tree. 2 is just insurance.

Only if it is less work than lithium batteries! That turned into a part time job last year. grin

Thanks to others for the insight on trees. Will have to put it on the wife’s list to start researching.

Must be a great year for fruit trees all together for whatever reason. I transplanted these little plums last year from some thick nasty cover where they were struggling for sunlight. For such a little tree they have a ton of plums on them yay yay
