Nice ray. How are you holding it and how do you keep from getting stung? I’ve caught a couple over the years on the beach in Texas, but I’m not getting near that stinger. I just cut the line.
I used to think the same thing until I saw people including kids holding them.
Landing them and getting in the boat is the most dangerous part. Once you land them or while you are landing them flip them on their back. You have to anyway to get the hook out. Then flip them on their belly and they have horns behind their eyes. Grab them by those, kind of like when dopes grab pike by their eye sockets. You can get a very good grip this way. Lift it keeping it a safe distance away from your body as possible.
It’s important to remember the stinger is at the base of the tail, not the tip. And it’s more like a serrated knife than a stinger.
I’ve found them to be pretty docile out of water. It’s not like they can flop around on the ground like a fish.
