The post ice, or should I say, receding ice Pike season is off to an AWESOME start!
We found these monsters yesterday hold up in a shallow bay in super clear water. Water temps were in the 48 – 50 degree range with the pike becoming more active as the day wore on. Both trolling and casting worked effectively and of the many different presentations we offered, the pike didn’t seem to key in on one particular lure. I will add that smaller seemed to be better.
The keys to catching the monsters yesterday were:
1) warmer water
2) tactically sight fishing them
3) slow retrieve
4) holding out until late afternoon
All in all we landed over a dozen big pike yesterday with at least 6 of them being trophy class, 40” or better. The biggest of the day was a late spawner, measuring 44” and still full of spawn. I should also note that it was a gorgeous day yesterday with a bright, cloudless blue sky and minimal wind.
