Parallel wiring question

Getting my new batteries ready to drop in the boat. Two questions:

    1) When wiring two batteries parallel, what gauge of wire should be used to connect them? Braided wire ok? The batteries will be side by side, so not a long length of wire.

    2) When connecting my charger (noco genpro 10×1), do I connect the charger to the same battery as the trolling motor lead, or would the trolling motor connect to one battery and the charger to the other

    Thanks!

I’d jumped the + to + and – to – with an 8 gauge minimum “stranded” wire. If it’s tinned, even better, but not completely necessary for freshwater use.

Then your TM+ to battery one’s + and TM- to battery two’s –

    Your charger do the same.

Have charger+ go to battery one’s+ and charger- to battery two’s- (or vice versa)

The exact configuration isn’t too important (battery one or two) but ideally you want your charger and trolling motor to pull/push “through” both batteries. Technically they don’t have to (especially with adequate wire sizes), but that’s what I’ve been taught and always done.

In the pic I drew up, you could flip flop the TM or the charger to the other posts and still have the same effect of pulling/pushing through both batteries (each post would have two wires, instead of 3:1). Same outcome, just a slightly different way.

Don’t forget a breaker on whatever + post you use that the TM is hooked to (guessing you’ll need a 60amp, but refer to your owner’s manual), and tighten the $hit out of you posts. Loose connections can cause big problems at high amp draws.

Hey! I spent five minutes typing that reply and then decided if I spent 17 seconds drawing a diagram we’d all be better off mrgreen

I even remembered to draw a keel on that fancy bow-mount jester

However, the boys let me use their markers…

    Another tip:

    (Deep thinking with B-man)

My brain’s automatic way of remembering the difference between parallel and series…Series makes “serious power” (aka two 12v batteries in series are 24v, three in series are 36v, etc)

Save that for a rainy day lol

That is actually helpful! Maybe we make “Deep thinking with B-man”

Just to confirm I’m understanding you, does the attached (inferior) drawing illustrate this correctly? I guess I would rather spread the connections over all 4 posts like this if it’s all the same.

Just my 2 cents worth…. I toasted a MinnKota 12v charger hooking it up like that. The second I plugged it in, started smoking and fried the wiring inside the charger.

This was 15+ years ago. They may make them to allow for this config now. Don’t know.

    Good Luck.

I think the charging tech has come a ways in 15 years but I’ll contact Noco to confirm. Two batteries properly wired in parallel should just look like a single 12v battery to the charger. The single bank on the noco is rated for up to a 230AH battery.

Kudos to Noco customer support, had this answered in under 5 minutes.

The second image below is actually the start of the chat.
