Paper straws and saving the world

I was at the Brewer Twins game today and the outcome was favorable being a Brewer fan.

The wife and daughter each got one of those fancy semi frozen alchohol flavored drinks. The drink came in a large plastic cup with a paper straw. Well after awhile the paper straw is soaked through and falling apart. Ended up getting plastic spoons too finish with the drinks. Ya, good idea saving with a paper straw.

On the bright side you can look down your nose at everyone using a plastic straw.

Just another one of those feel good ideas that are entirely impractical. But hey you feel good about saving the world don’t ya?

Plastic straws and plastic bags are literally the worst things for the environment outside of a major oil spill.

Buy a stainless steel straw and bring it with you or drink faster.

I have no problems with reducing reliance on plastic. Gotta start somewhere.

What is impractical about putting less plastic into our environment?

My kids bring metal straws with em most places they go.

I think what is impractical is that your kids reduce the plastic toll of 2 straws while China dumps 2 tons of straws per day. Not arguing with you because my kid does it too but it’s our needle and their haystack. If we want clean oceans than these garbage dumping nations should be cleaning our beaches.

I try to do what I can. I’ll bring my reusable stainless mug in when I buy coffee and my insulated mug when I buy soft drinks. Never have an establishment tell me I can’t use them.

In that picture… a plastic glass, plastic water bottle, plastic seat back, plastic on the flip flops… and a paper straw. meh

    Right on!

The next place selling stuff had plastic straws.

Also it’s a frozen drink. You cannot suck it up through a paper straw real fast.

I sure don’t see a reason while I’m at home planning to go somewhere that I need to pack my metal straw.

Hell I have a hard enough time remembering a church key when I’m going to drink from the bottle.

I’ve used some really nice paper straws that held up quite nicely and didn’t give you a paper flavor to the drink. However most places that give out paper straws have the ones that crumble before you can take a drink and taste like a paper mill.

This I’m curious on. Can you explain why a plastic straw is worse then plastic water bottles?

(I’m gonna put a nuclear disaster slightly ahead of straws if that’s ok…lol)

Was at the brewer game last Sunday . Wouldn’t want to be dragging all that metal through security checkout scanners .

The primary part of the world responsible for this problem, as you guessed, is Southeast Asia. China, Vietnam, Philippines, etc. Too many people, not enough infrastructure, corrupt government and politicians.

This is true but everyone contributes. It was disheartening to see the amount of plastic floating down pool 2 this weekend. Bottom line is we need to control what we can control at this point.

I’ll grant you the nuclear disaster. But a plastic straw takes 1000 years to break down. I think the inconvenience of your paper straw getting mushy is tolerable.

When we were in Florida this winter the restaurants offered SS straws for a buck. If it’s to inconvenient to bring have your drink without.

You do realize that a lot of the trash that gets dumped in SE Asia, comes from the US, right? And once it’s shipped out it’s “officially” “recycled” as far as the US is concerned. And now that they’re no longer taking our trash lots of cities are ending, scaling back, or needing to pay a lot more to continue their recycling programs, and landfilling more and more plastic.

    https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/oct/05/huge-rise-us-plastic-waste-shipments-to-poor-countries-china-ban-thailand-malaysia-vietnam

Plastic recycling is a giant fraud, and that poop lasts forever.

On a recent trip to Manitoba, it was readily apparant(at least where we were) that they made a concerted effort to reduce single use plastics in lots of situations. Paper products and washable/reusable items were the norm. Compared to the mountains of single use plastics we toss away, it was encouraging to see. Bring back paper products and let the clear cutting begin(and let the grouse return!!….lol)

The one thing that got each of us to initially check this website out was our passion/hobby/love for at least part of the outdoors, that being fishing and/or hunting. There are threads every single winter about fisherman leaving trash on the ice. There have been ones about shore fisherman leaving beer cans, styrofoam crawler containers, etc. And typically everyone seems onboard.

Which is why it just blows my mind that people want to mock and ridicule something like paper straws. How long ago was it there was a thread about people dumping trash at boat launches? If we’re going to try and keep the outdoors cleaning and preserved why not be consistent? Is the straw thing not cool enough or what? I’m just generally curious why some people who claim to love the outdoors are so against efforts to clean up the outdoors.

What does it matter whether it’s paper or plastic? Littering is still littering. It’s not like it takes 1,000 years to decompose a plastic straw.

I agree that we need to start somewhere. I am very much a conservative, but the one thing I don’t get is the resistance to make a few changes that will be better for the environment.

One needs to decide if they want to be part of the problem or part of the solution.

It takes 200. That’s not bad enough to want to do something?

Thanks for the post Dan. My thoughts exactly. The amount of plastic floating thru pool 2 tonight the day after heavy rain was sickening. Night and day vs a few days ago. That stuff wasn’t deliberately tossed in the river but that’s where it ends up.

Intentions and outcomes are two very different things. If you think some plastic straws you use doesn’t end up harming the environment even when you “properly” dispose of them, you’re mistaken.

If people can carry those stupid Yeti and knockoff two-piece screw together pointless koozies with them, they should be able to carry a reusable straw or at the very least “suffer” through using a biodegradable straw.
