Pool 13 – Crappie 09/08/2010

I hit 13 on Wednesday to see if I could find some slabs. The water is still very high and swift in the upper sloughs. I had temps just under 68, everywhere I went.

I sure found the crappies, but only 12 made it into the boat, along with a 38″ gar. I had many additional crappies on, but I was definitely off my game and kept losing them. My first bite of the day was a monster slab that broke my line as I was hoisting it into the boat. Typically, I don’t use a net. I best change that approach.

I got most fish right at the edge of the faster water, next to slack water. I had to upsize to 1/8 ounce jigs, for best results. Every fish was caught on chartreuse tubes tipped with minnows. Of the fish I brought home, eight were at least 12″ long. They were really nice fish.

It was a great day, with the exception of my trolling motoring not running right, my livewell pump leaking, and the aero-bait bucket pump not pumping. No pictures, because someone left the camera at home, and it was dark, when I returned.

Other than your last paragraph sounds like a pretty good start to the fall bite.

Sounds like a nice outing. I’m still learning how to find and catch crappies. Thanks for your report.

The slabs better be careful when you are fishing once fall truely arives. It sounds like a very good outing, one like what I need.

We still have water temps in the high 70s

What a bummer of a day

I hate when a day of fishing turns out to be a bad day

Great post Jeff, I really had to laugh at the stuff that happened to you, cause it’s so true. Especially if you don’t go out very often, then you’re always forgetting something, or the bugs are all over you all day long, or the wind is a zillion miles per hour, etc. I loved your crappies though, good fish…I always think about using the net on them too but, the gamble is part of the game. By the way, crappies are starting to bite well in pool 8 too right now, had a good day on Friday. Jeff, if you read this, where exactly is pool 13? Good luck on your next crappie adventure!

Near as I can figure it is from Blanding to almost Fulton. Hope this helps you…

I guess technically, Blandings is in pool 12. I spend most of my time just south of Blandings, on the other side of the dam. The south side of Bellevue Iowa is at the north end of pool 13.
