Trophy Sunfish Size?

  • #1311876

    Hey guys,

I finally got a chance to hit the water over the Memorial weekend and targeted a northern WI lake for some sunfish. Ended up with 4 fish over the 10.5″ mark, and was wondering your guys’ take on what you would consider a trophy sunfish for our inland lakes here in MN & WI???

    Thanks guys.

I dunno from length… I usually go by weight. Anything over 12 oz is awesome, anything over a pound is stunning. I saw a 1.5# bluegill once and it was mighty impressive.

    And it got filleted.

I gotta say hanging out here has really changed my thinking about some aspects of fishing.

Anyway, after playing with a fishing weight calculator, 10×14 is over 1.5#, and that’s a trophy by any stretch.

Anythink over 10″ I would say is trophy. 12″ up is scary huge! How old would a 12″ gill be… can’t grow very fast after 4-5 years I’m guessing. 10yrs? That would be one old gill I would think but I’m no expert

Have you ever noticed how ratty and “bedraggled” a 1#+ sunfish looks? They HAVE to have some years behind them.

Dude you haven’t had fun till you’ve hooked into a 2# white bass on a 7′ st croix ultralight. I wouldn’t go back to a 5′ ultra if st croix offered me a lifetime supply for free.

    Wait…

If I could sell them on eBay, maybe… ;-)

If you ever have the cance to try one… I strongly recommend you take it!
