Returning home Friday night after a trip from draggin’ cats with the daughter, I slipped into bed softly hoping not to wake up the other half. Just as soon as my mind became numb to my surroundings and on a trip to never, never land I was snapped back to reality with a “WELL”…….well what was my response. Well are we having a fish fry this weekend? These are the words I just hate to hear from my dear loved one, do you mean I have to go fishing tomorrow just to get us a fish fry Look out crappies here I come
The first thing I noticed and just like the last trip I reported on, the specks were not really relating to the wood in the deep yet. I have to believe with the water temps never getting above the mid 70’s this year, the crappies have had no reason to seek out cooler waters in the deep. The LX-5 revealed fish cruising in the deep water around the structure but these fish were negative to an array of offerings. The action on this day was found on humps in 5fow while drifting.
Pictured below, in hand was the bait that took most of the paper mouths Saturday evening. Running second was an orange jig head with white hair also tipped with a minnow. Placing these jigs and minnows 3 feet below a bobber and drifting with the wind across the humps staying in 4-5fow made for non stop action. The drift was controlled and slowed down with the help of my electric trolling motor. The bites were hard and there was no need of spoon feeding these speckled sides. The soft lipped critters were averaging 10 inches with a few at 11 inches, just right for the fryer in my book.
In short order a fish fry was put together and the rig was loaded up and on the way back home. Saturday was a great day to be on the water with the light wind, great bite and ultra light tackle. The crappies seem to be on a mission right now and it appears this bite is going to last awhile. Get out and enjoy yourselves while the getting is good
Good luck fishing people
