The panfish bite in Wright Co. is about as good as it gets. I got home from work, and Alex had one thing on his mind, hearing a dog fish bark. I started something with him last time out in the boat, and the little guy won’t rest until he actually hears a dog fish bark
We loaded up the boat and headed out for what was an amazing evening of panfish action, and the weather was not so bad either. We got to the lake to find only one other boat at the access. We had the bay all to ourselves, and had only one thing in mind, located some big pre-spawn pies. Big minnows, lip hooked on a white and pink flu flu, was the hot ticket for us. I got a mixed bag of minnows, and I will say that these bigger fish wanted nothing to do with the standard crappie minnow, they wanted a much bigger meal, more along the lines of a fathead. Alex has now figured out the game, he baits his own hook, casts all on his own, and last night he finally got the hang of how to get these fish to go. A simple cast, let it sit for a minute, and then pop the cork a few times with about a turn and a half on the real. I stood in the front of the boat for almost an hour just watching him work his mojo. I have to say that watching all of this come together last night was very rewarding after all the time on the water that we have shared. To say proud, would be a major understatement. I love this!!
The bass have moved in to the bays in droves. We started out working some places were we had good fish a week earlier, and all we found were bass. Seeing this we moved on, I knew with the water temps still under 60 degrees, the crappies were still in there, we just needed to make a small adjustment to give the crappies a chance to get at our baits. We located a big school that was relating to some floating debris out away from shore, and there were not any bass in the mix with these big crappies. We camped out for about 2 hours and got into the fish hand over fist. The afternoon prior I had build a new play set in the backyard for the kids, and I know that Alex was mixed with emotions about what he really wanted to be doing. Fishing was great, but at the end of two hours, he wanted to head for home so he could get some time on the new play set befor dark. At 7:30pm, we packed it up and headed home. It was a great end to the week, and I can’t wait to get him back out this weekend in search of the elusive barking dog fish. Have a great weekend on the water I know we plan to!
