People are always asking what are good rods for catching panfish on so I thought lets start a thread on favorite panfish rods.

My favorite panfish rods are St. Croix Avid 6’6” light action fast tip and also a 6′ St. Croix Premier light action fast tip rods. St. Croix rods are hard to beat when it comes to sensitivity and quality. I sure love em.
    Thanks, Bill

My favorite is a 9 ft. UL custom made St. Croix. It was made from a 3 weight fly rod blank and is a spinning rod. Every fish bends the rod a lot, but even big fish do not over-tax it. It acts like a shock absorber and the fish tire themselves out. Have caught fish over 10 lbs. without any problem. It also allows me to cast very light jigs a long ways. Very fun rod to use!

What reel do you use with that nine ft.Mike? Sounds like a sweet set up.

I use an Okuma Metaloid 15. It has 10 ball bearings and is top quality. Makes this a very nice rig. My fishing buddy Ron (RHW) has the exact same combo. We really love fishing with them!

I know I am cheap , but I use the 6 foot 6 inch Berkley Cherrywood rod. (I bought it clearanced for $15). I match it with a Mitchell Avocet reel.
    I mainly bobber fish though.

Makes me want to pull out the old telescoping fiberglass cane poles.

Most of my panfishing is commando style. I have 5’6 Fenwick HMX that is a joy to throw small jigs. I also have (2) 5′ Gander IM7 specials that work extremely well with small jigs and bobbers. Sedona’s on all.

I have 5’6″ UL Shimano Compre. I teamed this up with the smallest size Cardinal reel. Most of my crappie fishing involves hip boots or waders and some decent hikes through the woods, so a compact set up is very nice. I can whip a little crappie setup quite a ways with it too.

My favorite is the one that has a Slab Crappie or Bull Bluegill putting a good bend in it!

    6’M-ML for jigging
6’6″M for swing fishing and bobber fishing
7’M for Slip Bobber fishing and long casting
    Longer rods for dipping

    Good luck,

I love my Shimano Compre UL.. I have a cheapie scheels UL reel, but the sensation and the play you get out of the Compre is fantastic…I since upgraded my Walleye rods to Compre as well.. not ready to pay for the St. Croix or Loomis’ yet.. but I think I’m only one step away!! I do really enjoy what I have now a lot.. if you are using a store combo UL setup you need to try it!
