Jig Trailers – Twister, Paddletail, Tube, or Hair?

Hey guys. I was just looking at some roostertail jigs earlier, and was thinking about the various trailers you can get these days. I mostly use twister tail-style grubs and paddletails, with some hair jigs as well. The hair trailers I tend to use when I want to be a bit more subtle than the plastics usually are. Just curious what your guys’ take of them is?

Lately I have been a Tattle Tail fan for both crappie and gills. Those extra knobs on the tail make for some pretty subtle presentations. Before that I was exclusively tiny tubes. Haven’t used hair in several years but I know it will still work.

    I don’t put a trailer on roostertails.

For jig fishing, I like hair. It seems to do good when the fish are neutral. When the water warms up and they want to chase I will go to plastics for crappie.

I think those roostertail jigs have enough going on with them to just leave them as they are. Personally I don’t fish a jig that has a blade of any kind hanging off the head, they’ll either be a hair jig or a plastic. Here are some of the crappie sized plastics I use on a regular basis, many of them all year long.

Well the rooster tail trailers I was referencing come already pre-rigged on the jigs when you buy them. They have multiple options, so that’s where I was coming from. I don’t have many hair jigs though, I might have to try a few more this year.

Suzuki, I like the look of those Tattle Tails! Do they have a little more subdued action compared to other plastics?

I think they are very subdued. The tail pulses with speed. Subtle and deadly. Sometimes I add a waxie when needed. They are my GO-TO gill bait right now.
