Locating Crappies

I am having a hard time finding crappies. I know there are a lot of them in the 2 lakes I target but I can never catch more than 2 trip. I keep moving, try different depths, and try numerous presentations. I have pulled out some real slabs out of the lake but I’ve never been able to get into that steady bite and bring home a complete supper. Moral is getting pretty low. Any tips?

It is really hard to give you much for tips without know the type of lake you are on. Is it deep or shallow, does it have much for structure, and how big of a body of water is it?

This time of year you will mostly find the crappies in the deep basin areas over mud. In the evenings the bugs rise out of the bottom and the crappie schools swim around in circles over these muddy basin areas.

If you want to target them in the evening they tend to move towards the edges of the deep water right before dark.

The last three lakes I have fished, the basin bite has been non-existent. A month ago the fish were stacked in the basins, now I’m finding them on the sharp breaks by the spawning grounds and by any weeds surrounding the main basin. Standing weeds has been a winner for one lake, drill on top of a weed and I’ll get 2-3 crappies right away but if I drill 2 feet from a weed I do not catch a thing. Just have to keep popping holes and hope you get lucky with hole placement.

The other lakes have no weeds, and the fish are on the sharp breaks where the basin gets close to shore along the spawning grounds. Fish are cruising in these lakes, suspended 3-5 feet off the bottom.

I’ve been having the same problem but I have fish down 3-5 feet of the bottom but the O2 levels are low and its causing the bite to slow down. I haven’t been able to provoke many bites but I’ll get 1 or 2 here and there that will bite.

    Good luck finding them!
