As I was getting ready to drive to Springfield(MN) to do some ard work and casino work, I got a call from my old neighbor, Dave Vanderwerf, who was going to be returning from a short fishing trip to Sauk Center. “Why don’t you leave a day early, and come to the cabin?” So, I did. I arrived about 30 minutes(the cabin is near Annandale) before he did, so I unpacked my gear, and started fishing from the dock. I had landed four sunfish & two small largemouth, and lost a nice crappie when he got there. We loaded up the pontoon, and tried a spot where he & the family had pulled in some crappies the weekend before. Finding nothing, we decided to drift along the shoreline near the cabin. Two spots produced all three species that I had hooked earlier. We fished for about two hours, always finding fish when we reached the same spot. Weedy bottom, six feet of water, drifting. When we trolled back to drift again, we caught nothing. We figured it must have been a speed thing. All were caught on small jigs–orange, chartreuse, & pink– with plastic and/or waxworms. I did catch some on Gulp 1″ tails, but the waxworms worked best. We kept 16 crappies from 10 ounces to a pound, 20 sunfish from 7″ to 8″, and we also caught 6 largemouth & lost two more. Biggest bass were 15-16″. Three northerner & a perch filled out the evening’s catch. We were more selective in the morning, keeping only 8 sunfish & another pound crappie. A great way to start my week!
