Glad for my scouting trip last week with my brother and his son, I was set to venture back to the little lake with my wife’s brother’s son (Alan) and one of his friends (Kevin) for some more rod bending from some BIG little fish!!! They were with their Mom in the Northwoods for a weeks worth of R&R.

Thursday and Friday nights were our opportunities and not having had any time to spend with the first four days made for an interesting start as I found out that Kevin did not want to fish. He would go along, but really didn’t care to partake in the fishing side of things. I told him once on the water that I could cast and he could reel and we’d see how it would go…

Well as the pictures attest, the kid with the biggest toothy grins was Kevin and other than line management, which is always tough on a twisty ultralight reel, he was hooked, happy and impressed!!!

We just pitched 1/32 oz. cubby mites with orange heads and I had two body styles left over from the ice fishing season, one chartreuse and the other and cotton candy glow (CJS) of sorts in white/pink with a single waxie. We fished these on 4# and 6# test line and used the line as our strike indicator. We pitched these baits at the shoreline lily pads and slowly swan them back to the 12′ rowboat.

We caught fish… gills to 9.5 inches, a few crappies (one we lost that looked a solid 12″ and a nice mix of LMB

    More on Friday night shortly.

…and Friday night we were able to get out a little bit earlier giving us some time to cover a bit more water than the night before where didn’t get started until 7:30.

Same package as before, but I did get one of my power pro rods into the fray with a little bit of florocarbon for a leader. It was handy to have that one rigged, even as Kevin’s line management was better, he was fighting a tough one. So each time we had to do some serious work on the UL, I was able to keep another rod in hand to keep him at work.

The last two pics are of Kevin with the largest measured gill at 9.5 as measured on my 60″ floating musky stick (only measuring device I could find on short notice) and Alan’s 9″ gill.

We did take with us said ruler and a landing net to be sure we didn’t lose any bigger crappies. I think I cleaned 7 fish the first night and 13 the second night releasing most all of the biggest fish.

Now the next step is to take my gracious host so she can see what a treasure she has in her back yard!!!
