Should Have Left The Minnows At Home.

Hit a small local lake Saturday early in the morning before the heat turned o n.

Started off slowly pulling jigs and minnows under a slip bobber while using the electric motor. It wasn’t long and it became obvious while doing zig zags, when the speed increased on the outside rig the minnows would get hit. The hits however where short only to have the minnow robbed. After experimenting with the speed and after losing a few more minnows it was time to change tactics on the finicky finned critters.

Armed with 6lb mono sporting a #5 Black Gold floating rapala tied to the end, the 25hp Merc was fired up. Trolling the set up approximately 80ft behind the boat turned short hits into rod bending action. I figured my rapala was running 2-2.5ft deep. The areas targeted were around humps and along drops in 5-8fow.

The set up caught at least 20 white bass in the 10-11inch class, 2 short walleyes at 14inches, a dozen cookie cutter crappies (5 of which became sandwiches), 1 fat perch (sandwich also), and 2 cute little ski’s that put on an awesome aerial display I’ll never forget.

With the sun beating down from high above and the heat turning up it was time to get off the water and head home around 11 o’clock. It was hard to leave with the bite still on but I hate heat, summer sucks

It was a short day on the water but the action was fast after finding what the predators in the water world were looking for.

    Good luck fishing people

    A small local lake.

The lake is small in size and see’s enough pressure without me having to mention the name. There will be plenty of locals that will recognize the lake and if it could be left that way the better this lake will be.
    No hard feelings I hope!
The reason for the report is to let everyone know that they might want to speed up presentations for the crappies right now. And what better way than to pull some small rapalas

How does that “ski” taste in a sandwich.

Sounds like a fun day! I have gotten into the crappie trolling shad raps for walleye before, amazing what they will hit. I remember one day we slaughtered the crappie on #7 orig floating rapalas behind bottom bouncers in 20′ of water.

The small sicks and peanut lures can really shine when the heat is on.

Early morning is a great time to tow shallow divers over deep water too. Crappies and pannies will come up a long way to hit when the sun is low on the water or if its cloudy.

    Great work Bret.
