NE Metro Crappie Report

I figured that I would break onto the IDO forums with a favorable fishing report from Bald Eagle Lake in the NE metro area. It was one of those days where jigs and rubber out-fished live bait decidedly. Finding the crappies wasn’t necessarily the challenge, but finding size was. I kept the trolling motor down and chased schools around catching mostly 6″ to 8″ slabs but every now and then you would run into a 2 to 3 fish flurry of 10″ and 11″ fish. Fish were in anywhere from 3′ to 10′ feet of water with the bigger fish actually coming shallower most of the time. Water temps varied from 50 to 53 degrees. Another fun day on the water!

Awesome picture Ryan! I’m glad to see that you joined the site. Ryan is a good friend of mine who catches tons of big fish. I figured he would bring some good knowledge to the website. Keep up the good work on the “BAIT FISH” buddy and I hope that you enjoy what ido has to offer.

Thanks everybody! Yeah Matt, Last year I couldn’t find the big fish with a search light on BE, but White Bear was great. This year WB has been kind of a dissapointment, we’ve still caught nice fish but not the 12″ and 13″ we got regularly last year.

In the lake I fish a lot, it seems to be a similar thing, I upsized my baits and get bigger fish, I was using 3 inch gulp minnow grubs ( for instance) and the little fish pretty much left them alone.

Nice post, I think I going to head out,

This nice weather should spike the water temps a couple degrees and have the fish pretty active. I love when they are hitting artificials… Even the smaller husky jerks can be a good bait for large, active crappies. However, I was getting them on a pretty small jig yesterday… Not even sure what kind of jig it was either..?..
