One of my favorite lakes for Pan Fishing. Considered a “Heritage Fishery” Nothing under 11″ I wish I would have taken a pic of the gills and crappies in hand but we were having so much fun reeling in fish I guess we forgot lol I usually like to catch and release but its great to have a big fish fry with friend’s and Family. The Crappie on ice that I’m comparing to my hand was caught on Lake Minnetonka (Six Mile Creek) one of my Favorite Lakes! 2012 Crappie Contest

X2 I’ve seen them before and the colors almost make it look like a coral reef fish in freshwater.

Hybrid Bluegill/Green. The Green gives it that elongate shape.

I love Greens and their hybrids… they are a unique sunfish due to their agression and their oversized mouth. They form a sort of bridge between the bass side (Micropterus) and the sunfish side (Lepomis) of Centrarchids. And then there’s the crappie branch of the family (Pomoxis).

    But I digress.

The green sunfish is so freaking aggressive that it will hit on Rapala and/or Daredevils being used to target largemouth bass. I’ve had one hit so hard I actually thought it was a small bass… turns out it was a 6″ green with a serious attitude.

And yes, I admit that while I did know that the bass and sunnies are part of the same family I DID have to go to wikipedia to look up the binomial nomenclature for these guys.

The predators were sluggish today, but I stumbled upon a hot bite. I haven’t targeted pannies in a long time, but I was catching these about as fast as I wanted. Decided to bring a few home for some fish tacos!

That’s my wife’s hand, not mine, BTW.

Man it’s been a long time since I hooked into any panfish of that quality.

    Congrats!

A few more pics from the night I took my daughter out…

The one was a big “buck” green sunfish hybrid… fought like a big bass.

    The pumpkinseed was just pretty.

The little one, well, I have no idea how it even got the hook in its mouth. The whole fish was only a little bigger than my thumb!

My good friend Randy made a trip from the SE corner of Wisconsin to check out the wing dam bite on Pool 8. I don’t think he was disapointed

    Dude, nice fish.

I keep wanting to target them in my favorite pannie-and-northern lake, but it’s a 90-minute drive and hauling the boat that far is a pain… but I think we just may pull it off for an end-of-season outing.

Hopefully I can match you for this one.
