Looking to get out for some gill action in the next 2 days.

Have not been out and done my usual early gill fishing yet this season.

Are they still spawning and are they fairly shallow in south central Minnesota?

    Thanks for any help.

I just had my best day ever for gill fishing! They were big and they were biting like piranas…tons of fun! This was on a East Central Mn lake so I gotta believe they are going in your neck of the woods too. They seemed to be hanging out in about 3-4′ of water and were biting on Gulp Waxies under a bobber. There isn’t too many things in life that get me more excited than fighting a 3/4 pound bluegill on ultralite rods! They get sideways and those buggers are hard to turn. In a couple weeks they will be up on the sand in about a foot of water and I get them with a firecracker ringworm. You wouldn’t think a sunny would go after such a big bait but they do and you only get the big ones with this method.

Which goes to prove that you can take the boy out of Pool 2 but you can’t take the Pool 2 out of the boy

    I totally agree ou812.

I cut my teeth fishing gills all year long when I was knee high to a grasshoper.

My grand parents had a campground and boat rental business in Wisconsin years ago and they would ask me to go down to the campground and clean out the boats and clean up around the grounds.

Grandpa would come down to the area and always catch me fishing.

I love to go out after bull gills with a canepole and watch them cut through the water.

There are times when I enjoy this type fishing better than anything else when the bite is good.

Sounds like a day trip needs to be planned soon.

That’s for sure Rootski! I just wish I could get there more often these days. Managed to sneak down there a couple times so far this spring and did well on hair and Grappler Shads. Surprised I haven’t ran into you down there but with the high water I’ve been mostly hiding way back in the side channels and little hidey holes here and there, so I really haven’t seen too many other guys.

Managed a good gill bite on Pool 5a last Thursday on the shallow sand flats just off the main channel. I was actually using a 1/8 oz. and 1/4 oz. blade baits I bought from Dean’s Tackle Box. Talk about fun and no re-baiting caught some up to 9.5″
