Pulling Bucktail Flies For Crappies

Does anyone do this? Many years ago, I was at the BearPaw outside of Rice Lake WI, and picked up some small black/white bucktail jigs that were absolutely amazing for crappies on Pool 13. They were 1/32 and 1/64 ounce, but were 2″ long. I ended up losing them and have never found them again. I have seen bucktail flies that walleye anglers use, and wondered if anyone else has thought about using them for crappies. I would get them with a smaller hook, and would be a bit nervous pulling them in the sloughs, but I think they would work.

Anyone have any thoughts on these?

I used small pink jigs with calf hair under a bobber for crappies back in the 60’s. They work great. If they were good then they are good now or is Darwinism at work here.

I fish panfish a lot using a flyrod. With Crappies I have the best luck with marabou because it has a lot of action even when you aren’t retrieveing very fast. I’ve also had very good luck with small Marabou jigs under a bobber thrown with a spinning rod. Two inches sounds about right.

It’s surprising how well a jig or a streamer fly can outfish live bait under a bobber!

Oh man, I have a scathingly brilliant idea!

    Picture this:

    Lake Geneva.

    July-August.

    80ft.of water.

    Crappies suspended at 40ft.

Small snap weight at 50ft. of line.

    White\off-white bucktail fly.

    .5 mph.

    What do you think?
