I had the chance to spend a day on the ice with my father the day after Christmas. We decided to hit pool 6. We headed for a local community spot and had the area to our selves for the first couple hours in the early morning. This would not last for long, by noon there must have been 50-75 people around us, but there was plenty of gills for everyone, as they were really on the chew. During our 6 hours on the ice we iced over 150 gills and one bonus crappie. A lot of small ones, but we managed to keep 16 nice size ones for a family fish fry.
I also tried my hand at some tip-up fishing for pike. I managed a couple flags, but the sucker minnow I was using got dropped on both. There was plenty of other people getting flags and fish. Most pike I saw averaged about 20 inches with some larger ones mixed in and an occasional bass. Shiners seemed to be the bait of choice.
