Anybody ice fish on blue lake in between LaCrescent and LaCrosse?…and if so is it a safe place to set up? I used to fish there a lot as a kid during the summer and often had good luck. I’ll be heading down there for Christmas and would like to take my nephew out ice fishing for his first time. Should be a hoot. Any tips would help.

    thanks

I haven’t, but thought the area looked interesting. I’m not sure the best way to get on it. I’m looking forward to others thoughts.

I agree, it should be good to go, matter in fact…..that doesn’t sound like a bad idea

There’s some good structure in there and its plenty deep for fish to suspend. I heard rumors a long time ago that there was a spot that stayed ice free most of the year due to a spring that was on the south side. Not sure of the best way to get in but maybe just to park behind the auto dealership and find a way down. I think the fish migrate in from target lake when the water level allows. Hope we get some slightly warmer temps or it could be hard to tempt my nephew given that he’ll be glued to his Nintendo Wii. I wonder if they have ice fishing for the Wii yet?

There were some guys out there over the weekend, but I haven’t heard any reports. There is a spring on the south side, you shouldn’t have any problems seeing it. Park on the main road and walk in, that’s the easiest.

When I fish it, I park behind the car dealers. Parking on the main road with this much snow is asking for an accident, IMO

There are some nice fish in there and I beleive it falls in the limit of 10 fish (bluegills). I think there is a sign where people park and walk in by the car dealers.

Is Blue unsafe to fish on this week or had they gotten too close to the spring?

They think it might have been a spring, two different areas while walking off though, and just after our usual weekly dump of snow

Use a spud still when crossing drifts.

Did anyone else see what looked like a group of 6-8 individuals around the open spring on Sunday afternoon? One guy was in the water and looked to be spearing. I witnessed one fish get pulled out of the water and put on the ice. I’m not sure about the regs for spearing, my neighbor called the TIP line, but I haven’t heard the outcome.

Well,In the past the DNR has opened that area for spearing, netting etc because of the lack of oxygen….The fish were gonna die anyway,
But I have not hear anything this year.
