The warm weather season is coming to an end – at least what’s considered warm by the Favorite Wife – so it was time to get out for another day of fishing Saturday on Pool 8 and make use of her half of the husban/wife license.
We started out fishing a snag that Bret Clark and I fished on Monday in some back waters but Bea (the FW) found only 1 crappie there so we moved to a hump that I always wanted to try that comes up to 5′ with 18′ on one side and 12′ on the other. The locator was marking all kinds of fish but no takers so I switched from minnows to a chunk of crawler and immediately found a couple of decent sized specks. The sun started hitting that spot so that was the end there.
We moved back to the main channel to a snag that Bret and I have fished many times for both crappies and cats. This area has some current – not much right now – and holds about 12′ of water. On the first cast we were back on some nice crappies and a few sunnies. Bea kept me busy netting the crappies that made for a nice fish fry. The most succesful colors were white or lime jigs but the best was a pink/white hair jig. A lesson was learned though by the FW not to “yank and crank” with crappies. She lost a dandy right up to the boat. Soon the sun hit that spot so we moved up stream to a wing dam to try for some gills. That’s when calamity struck – I threw out my water spike to anchor up stream and realized too late that it had become un snapped from the rope ooooppppppppppssssssssssss – oh darn! or something like that was muttered. The adventure today to try and snag it is in a report by Bret. With my next water spike there will be no snap – it will be permantly attached!!! Overall a fun day on the river with the FW who let me buy that new boat two years ago.
The water temps are starting to drop – I measured 67 today – so things should only start to pick up from here on in so get out and enjoy some fall fishing – before we know it we’ll be fishing on hard water.
