A friend and I had a chance to fish in Lake City without the boat today and we did quite well actually. Crappies to 12 1/4 inches and sunfish to 9 1/2 inches were caught along with a couple of sheephead that got the kinks out of the lines.
Culprit paddletails and mini-mites each too fish without any specific color pattern or combination being than the other. With or without a float never got to be an issue either. The one bait “constant” was that at least a piece of waxie had to be on the hook as enticement.
The early on was from the south which made the casting a snap, but as the morning wore on the wind gradually got inched around to the east and that made long casts tough with those light lures. On a positive note though, the waves being pushed into our shoreline set up some good feeding lines that the fish discovered and were quite willing to use. Many of our thirty five or so total fish came only ten feet off shore.
The fish we handled were still very warm to touch. As cooler weather approaches more often now, the water temps will show a marked drop and the crappies will begin their annual fall tear….it’s really not that far off.
