I was in Red Wing for work yesterday and took a few minutes after the bank run to snoop around a couple of haunts in the Baypoint Harbor. I don’t have much time to spend when I am supposed to be working and opt to just rig a rod and use it. For the last month and a half I have been using a 1/16 JBLures Tadpole spin. Yesterday it was once again flawless in use and in catching fish.
The spinner is large enough to eliminate a sunfish bite, but the crappies like it and in ten minutes I managed around a half dozen. They liked the bait around some sunken wood, actually the deep end of a beaver lodge. A couple white bass joined in the fray and then it was back to work.
Where the river widens below Red Wing the water was still that puke green and smelling not so good. Darned few boats were out in the morning as we passed, but a few were braving the smell in the early evening.
I’m guessing that with the crappies available from shore and on structure in an eddy area they’d also be available on some of the wingies and would certainly be showing up in other harbor settings.
Yesterday’s fish were not huge, 11 inches being about the largest. I sure numbers could have been gotten had I had the time to invest. It was a fun 10 minutes tho.
