When my 13 year old daughter said she wanted to do some fishing at the breakfast table Sunday morning, I nearly choked on a piece of bacon! It’s not as if she’s “allergic” to fishing but she usually only wets a line when we take her grandfathers 20′ Triton Pontoon out. My original intent for the day was to down-shift from a pretty active Walleye bite the last few weeks and chase down some backwater smallies. However, I was more than happy to let them smallies alone and do some bottom dwelling with my daughter. Afterall, it’s about that time of year when the Victory rock line turns into “gill-ville”. Started fishing at 10:30ish. The word “simple” itself is more complicated than river rig we threw at’em. A # 8 gold hook tied 12 to 16 inches below a 1/2oz sinker. She had the first 8″ gill on shore before I even got a chance to make that first cast. Could’ve easily threw a limit of 8″ to 9″ gills on ice in a couple of hours, but started pitching them back after a dozen. That’s enough for a couple of fish sandwiches. Other “unwanted” species caught were Drum, Fiddler Cats, Carp, LMB, & even a 23″ Pike. Gate keeper up at Genoa must’ve locked some small vessels through around 1:00ish. A 10 minute constant barage of pleasure cruisers headed south and resulting wake quickly turned the “crystal-clear” Mississippi shore line back into the “muddy” Mississippi. The bit followed the boats – South. Here’s a pic of a few of what we caught. Couldn’t comfortable fit 1/2 dozen on the 9×15 chopping block….
