A friend of mine called me yesterday around 5 pm and asked me to go out fishing with him before the storms hit. I didn’t need much convincing and met him at the boat ramp a half hour later. It is a nice change of pace for me to fish out of somebody else’s boat for a change. We stayed within a couple miles of the boat ramp due to the storms that were headed towards Dubuque. We stopped to cast some cranks on a wingdam and got into the white bass as well as several large mouth and small mouth bass. I easily caught 30 nice whites and a good dozen assorted bass in about an hour and a half of casting. I thought of putting on a top water but the fish weren’t really working the surface so I stayed with the crank. I was having a blast seeing how many consecutive casts I could catch a fish on. I made it to 4 casts in a row on several occasions but wasn’t able to get beyond 4 casts. Most of the LM & SM bass we caught were under 14″ but a few would have measured. The whites were nice size fish for the most part with an ocasional smaller fish mixed in. I would have been happy to stay and fish that dam the rest of the evening but I was along for the ride and my buddy wanted to fish 3-way DBQ rigs on another dam to see if we could find a walleye or two. We did end up catching a 21″ and a 16″ walleye as well as a couple more stripers. It didn’t start raining in DBQ until around 10pm and we were off the water long before that. It seemed like one of those times right before the storm when everything in the river is on a feeding frenzy. I really enjoyed the non-stop action casting cranks and, even though I don’t keep any of the fish, I’ll be back out doing it again one of these next evenings. Catching fish can be addictive.

That would have been a blast with a flyrod.
