Since it’s been slow on the ol’ panfish forum lately I thought I’d post something you might find entertaining. Yesterday I was on a lake doing some late ice crappie fishing and saw something I had never seen before. A fishergal was pulling a small sunnie up the hole only to have it pursued by a pike. Well, the pike came right up out of the hole and onto the ice in pursuit of a meal–wasn’t even hooked!! I have seen pike grab onto a hooked bluegill before but never come out of the water. Amazing.

I’d like to have seen that myself.

Do they allow recreational drug use in Mn. now? Or were you sniffing the minnow bucket and got some bad fumes?

That WOULD have to be one mighty aggressive fish! Now, I’m not a recreational user (not a professional either!) and I’ve never heard of any fish jumping up and through the hole on it’s own accord, but I HAVE EXPERIENCED pike jumping as far as 24″ (give or take an inch) for a lure dangling from the end of a rod. And yes fishing machine, it DOES scare the………..be jiggers………did you call it?…………….yeah, “be jiggers” out of you! I had this HAPPEN to me 3 times so far, and the biggest pike to do it was 25″ long. I doubt I’ll catch any monsters that way, but those littler ones can get downright stupid in their “no fear” attitudes!

I had the same thing happen to me last summer near lynxville, where i caught one of those ever present 4 inch blue gills and all of the sudden it felt like i got snagged or something when all of the sudden a pike jumps up out of the water with my line in his mouth!!! It wasn’t that bad of a pike, but i thought maybe it would classify under foul hooking or something so i released it. It was fun though!

A couple of years ago my friend had a 40″ or so musky jump completely out of the water as his jig dangled just above the water on Bald Eagle. He darn near swamped my boat (in my old boat w/ 2 people you werent sitting very high above the water) and I dont think his heart started for a few minutes. The musky jumped to about eye level before splashing back into the water.

I got a great laugh out of that one!

Hey BFD, doesn’t every fisherman like minnow bucket fumes? I find they clear my mind and bring total consciouseness. Besides, I’m originally from Iowa so be careful—go Hawks!!!
