Finally got on the ice on Saturday. Went out of the Galena area. GREAT DAY! Didn’t start fishing until 10:00 a.m. – no ice shack and a little on the brisk side – but the fish were hitting. The river is on the rise so many backwater areas have current. Finally found a spot with no current. Fished in about 2 1/2 feet of water. Most of the bigger gills and crappies were only about 8 inches below the ice. I had six inches of ice where I was fishing. Be careful – with the snow on the ice there were several areas close by that had as little as two inches! Had my best luck on a purple colored rocker and a red roc-a roo. The crappies were smashing both lures as were the gills. Ended up bringing home 14 gills and 12 crappies. Gills were all 7 inches+ and the crappies were 11 inches+ in size. Hope to get out this weekend. Have a great week.
