The Mississippi River in Winona is higher than normal but the bluegills continue to bite well in the backwaters here.
I fished by wading Saturday and the water was high but quite clear. That meant a dark pattern, in this case an all-black weighted nymph some call a modified black gnat. It has a tail of black hackle fibers, a body of black chenille, and a collar of black hackle, all tied over lead wire for weight. I fish it on spinning tackle below a float and split shot. Threw back about 20, kept eight nice ones, average length 8 inches.
The crappies were still biting also.
