    Just got done reading the posts on everyones favorite pan fish and thought we should start talking about finding some of these tasty little guys.
    When I,m not chasing eyes I usually like to chase a few crappies. I only know a few spots one the river that they hang in but there has got to be some more spots out there.
    Deep holes hold the fish for me and there has to be ether a steep ledge or some timber in the hole for them to hang on. If I find them on the structure i can usually pull some pretty good numbers of them out of it. The crappies can hold pretty tight to the structure. Sometimes it is an area half the size of the boat. I seem to find the crappies somewhere between 10′ to 20′ in these holes with some of these holes running alot deeper than that. I look more for the structure than anything else in them
    I also have a spot that the crappies will come into at dusk and into the night. It is a sand bar at the south end of a point with a shallow backwater on the one side. This spot is only a couple of feet deep in most areas. It is a great spot to throw a lighted bobber out after them.
    I was looking all over for some info on spring time crappies earlyer this and could not find any. I think this board is a great idea and hope to find some great info on it.

    Good luck fishing

    I find them in rivers around downed trees. In one spot I know of there are trees that are downed going from shore out into a current area that Crappies like to hang out at. Another area is where there are grass/weeds/stick ups and just cast a bobber to the edge for bluegills. Weed edges, or any edges are possible places for panfish to gather. I look forward to hearing about other peoples favorite spots too. Thanks

    Most of the spots i chase them at are 10′ or deeper. Do you think they stick to the holes more or the structure.

    Thats a good question. They like to relate to structure just like any other fish, especially wood. Minnows can alot of times be found in the wood too. But the hole also gives them security due to the depth of the water and is darker as not as much light in deeper water. Yet alot of times on a lake you will find them suspended in open water too. I’ve caught crappie casting small jigs to some cover in deep water and have also caught them trolling #5 shadling [smaller than a #5 shad rap] in open water on a lake. As to which one is best, I think it depends on what the fish “need” at that time. Food, hiding place, searching for something, or what? They do seem to always relate to something whether it be structure close by, suspended out aways from structure, under or in structure or near a food source. Anybody else have some different views on this subject or more insight? Thanks.

    In the summer on the river I wait for low stable water fishing the deeper slow moving eddies with wood. In the fall the crappies will follow the shad back into dead water, {winter areas}, then alittle before the ice forms they seek the current which offers stability in temperature, then they head back into the dead water to winter. ???question??? How do all of you target crappies on the river when it’s mainly high & going up and down? {John}

    Thats interisting Gills. I now on the winter they can be found in one of the backwaters in Osceola out of the current and in probally 5′ of water.
    I was crussing through one of the backwater lakes up here on friday and noticed alot of lilypads coming up and started to wonder if there was any in there. Tonight or tommorow i think i will have to take some jigs in there and check them out.Usually it is only a foot deep in there. It must be four by now
