Just wondering if anybody has been fishing for crappies or gills in the backwaters on pool 12 or 13 and are you having any luck? Thanks Rick

dubiceman what method is working for you and are you fishing the shallow backwater lakes or catching them deeper? I’m probably going Friday to give it a try. Thanks Rick
April 15, 2004 at 2:16 am #301144We’ve been fishing the shallow back waters along the shorelines. Been getting the gills under a cork with crawler and the crappies the same way except with a minnow. Gonna head out this weekend if it stays warm and doesnt rain.Post back and let us know how you do. Good Fishin

April 15, 2004 at 5:36 am #300847Off to Savanna in the mornin. Hope for some good luck at Brown’s. Might hit the Sabula Slough if Brown’s doesn’t pan out. I’ll let ya know how I do.
April 15, 2004 at 10:40 am #301167Thanks for the info guys I’ll post when I get back Friday night. Hope you have good fishin today icehogfan.
April 16, 2004 at 2:07 am #301273Nothin. Noda. Zip. Zero. Not a single bite all day! Fished minnows with & without jigs, leaf worms, even broke down & casted a crank bait for a while. Nothin. Fish finder made noise all da long & fished the depths that was showing fish & just couldn’t get anything to bite. The fish must have known it was me. Bad part is this is the first time I’ve taken out my 3 year old. At least I still have plenty of minnows left to take him out again tomorrow.
April 16, 2004 at 10:59 am #301292IceHogsFan it sounds like you had the same kind of trip theat I had 2- weeks ago.I’m leaving in about an hour to try my luck on pool 12 maybe we will both have better luck today.
April 17, 2004 at 12:47 pm #301385Fished from 9:00 to 3:00 yesterday caught a huge carp on a nightcrawler and ice jig and found 1 spot out of about a hundred brushpiles that we managed to catch 4 nice slab crappie out of,nothing on waxies all fish were caught on minnows under a slip bobber, water temp. got up to 66.
April 19, 2004 at 5:40 pm #301572Carp on an ice jig huh?!? Wow. I think the highest I saw the water temp on Thursday was 49ยบ, but I don’t know how accurate the fish finder I was using is. Is your thermometer on your fish finder or do you use something else? If that’s surface temp then I can believe it. With any luck the temps are coming up & the fish will get more active. I’m just dumbfounded on how many blips my fish finder was hitting on Thursday w/o any bites. Maybe another week or two……
April 19, 2004 at 5:45 pm #301573BTW The lady that sells bait in Lanark said the ‘gills were hitting around Michalsons. I’ve only ice fished around there so I wasn’t comfortable takin my son out there in a boat for the first time. She said they were hitting on leaf worms.

April 19, 2004 at 10:52 pm #301639IceHogsFan I don’t know about Thursday but Friday thats what I had on both my front and back depth finders within 1 degree of each other, I imagine though that this is a surface temp. reading if it’s coming of the bottom of the boat in the back finder and off the trolling motor transducer in the front. Hey the carp was a blast and the crappie are going to ET good tonight.
April 28, 2004 at 6:08 pm #302740Just wanted to bump this one back up. Has anyone done any good in the last week or two? I’d like to get back out there but with my situation with my kids I have to be a little conservative on when I choose to go again. I’m not looking to slaughter ’em (if I do that’s ok though ) but just don’t want to get skunked again.
Also, it’s been many years since I’ve been back in Pin Oak, but every time I make it over there I always hit Browns. Should I start at Pin Oak instead? Someone enlighten me.
April 28, 2004 at 9:17 pm #302880IceHogsFan I heard last weekend that they were starting to catch crappies in back of Soup Bone Island which is on your way to Browns, also heard they were catching crappies on Lower Sabula lake. I’ve been wanting to go pretty bad myself but the weather just hasn’t been all that good. Good Luck to you if you make it out.
April 29, 2004 at 5:15 am #302931Well if the wife is still pissed off at me in the morning then I’ll be fishing. I think I’ll try Pin Oak first then decide how bad I want to urine her off. I should be on the water by noon.
April 29, 2004 at 5:27 am #302932BTW Is that Big Soup bone or Little SoupBone? I’m guessin Little Soup Bone since that’s the inlet to Browns. I fished that hard two weeks ago with no luck. If I make it out tomorrow I’ll be by myself so maybe I can fish it harder.
April 29, 2004 at 8:43 pm #303031IHF>>>> your right it was Little Soupbone heard it on the fishing report last weekend. 2-weeks can make alot of difference this time of year the water is getting warmer every day.Do you ever listen to the fishing report on Sat. morning on WCCI it is on channel 100.3 FM. at 7:30 check it out if you don’t allready Mike covers the Rock River from Rockford to Dixon and then swings over to the Mississippi River and starts at I think Guttenburg and goes all the way down river to Savanna. Hope this helps some thats all the information I have right now I’m suposed to be going on Monday with my son and Wed. with my dad ought to be a great time. Good Luck BIGJIGGER2002
April 30, 2004 at 4:54 pm #303180Thanks for the info. I’m usually at work by 7:30 on Saturdays but I’ll try to catch it. Didn’t make it over to the Miss yeaterday. Had some other problems around here to deal with. Maybe next week.
May 4, 2004 at 12:35 am #303540Boy what a nice day, I’ve got Mon.,Tues. Wed. off for vacation today I got to spend the day with my 19 year old son it was a beautiful day we didn’t hammer the fish but we caught a few quality fish and had agreat time doing it.I had my sites set high because I was out two weeks ago and fished a spot that we caught just 4- nice fish at but it was A real nice spot and I thought it would really be turned on by now and it hasn’t yet.I think that we need just a little bit more of a temp increase, like about 5-8 degrees and then look out,I had 62 degrees at the end of the day so the water hasen’t got any warmer in the last two weeks, WHATS WITH THE WEATHER ANYWAY! I think I might try pool 13 with my dad on Wed. I’m just not as familiar with 13 as I am with pool 12. Well if theres any tips on 13 for crappies or gills please let me know.
May 5, 2004 at 2:15 pm #303570The slough you refered to previously behind Little Soupbone Island leads into Lower Brown’s Lake. I usually hit there first. As you’ve seen me post I haven’t had a lot of luck so far this year. But I usually just fish a hook bobber & minnow on one pole & worm on the other along the West bank. Work the down trees in the slough also. Just up from Little Soupbone is the inlet to Pin Oak Lake. I haven’t been back there in a few years but you may have some luck in there also. Be carefull though ‘cuz it’s shallow. Where are ya puttin in at?
May 5, 2004 at 9:18 pm #303823Just got back from pool 13 thought dad and I would try Spring Lake it was the first time there for both of us we fished from 9:00 til about 2:00 caught 2 small bass in 5 hours and no other bites, water temp.62-64 we marked alot of fish but just couldn’t get them to bite. We tried minnows, crawlers and waxies but not a bite from the crappies or gills sooneror later they’ve got to turn on. Well back to work tommorow VACATIONS OVER for this week IceHogsFan do you ever fish upper Browns or just Lower and when your going up Lainsville slough to get to lower Browns do you stop and fish the short rock wingdams?
May 6, 2004 at 2:09 am #303793I’ve only fished Upper Brown’s a couple of times. Took my boss in there about 8 years ago & he hit a nice slab crappie in a jitterbug! To be honest I didn’t know there was wing dams in the slough. I usually just fish the down trees.
May 6, 2004 at 10:36 am #303830The wingdams are on the east side of the slough I beleive there are 2 maybe 3 till you get to lower browns.
May 14, 2004 at 12:51 am #304718Anybody been out lately? I hope to go Sunday I’ll report when I get back.
May 14, 2004 at 1:42 am #304739Fished Bertom the last few days and have been getting some nice crappies and largemouth. Hope to get out saturday again. Will report back on how I do.
Dubiceman
May 14, 2004 at 9:15 pm #304861dubiceman does Bertom have any kind of depth to it alot of the lakes down river are becoming hard to get to because of low water and all silted in. Do you fish the shoreline brush here or is there some submerged wood on the bottom that you fish? I was wondering also if you have ever fished in that Mcartney Lake for crappies?
May 17, 2004 at 10:15 am #304988I was on Stone Lake Sunday caught 6 crappies kept 3 also one largemouth bass, all were caught on a gold hook and minnow under a slip bobber.
May 17, 2004 at 1:27 pm #305010Went to Cattail slough Saturday afternoon. Caught 8 nice crappie, 6 nice bluegill and 1 keeper Bass about 16″ also a Dogfish. Crippie were caught on black/chartruse jig tipped with minnow under a slip bobber, bluegill on minow and worm, and bass were hitting leaches. Wasn’t a bad afternoon.
May 17, 2004 at 9:05 pm #305099CNinIL —– Hey great report! it sure is nice hearing from some other fisherman that fish these lower pools.
May 20, 2004 at 1:02 am #305461Thanks, Actually that was my first time fishing up there. Plan to do it more though. I found this site when looking for ice fishing info. just thought I would share my results, hopefully more to come.
